Elon Musk’s Government Efficiency Department (DOGE) has come under intense scrutiny after a series of layoffs that inadvertently included 350 key employees from the U.S. Department of Energy. The affected workers were not just administrative staff as initially assumed, but highly specialized experts in nuclear warhead assembly, control, and waste management. The controversy began when DOGE, a department founded to streamline government processes, made a sweeping decision to cut 2,000 employees from the Department of Energy. Among those let go were 350 individuals working under the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the body responsible for managing the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The cuts targeted the Pantex plant in Texas, which is critical for the assembly and maintenance of nuclear warheads, and saw a 30% reduction in its workforce.

The layoffs were intended to target what DOGE officials believed were probationary or administrative employees, but no one had thoroughly vetted the roles of those being let go. To their surprise, many of the laid-off workers were highly trained specialists, including those with expertise in assembling nuclear warheads and overseeing control and disposal of nuclear waste.

The Backlash and Response

The mass layoffs quickly led to an uproar, with critics pointing out the risks posed by firing such vital personnel. According to CBS, those overseeing the cuts failed to understand the importance of the individuals they were letting go. Musk’s decision-making approach, often characterized by a focus on cutting costs first and evaluating the impact later, came under heavy fire.

In response to the backlash, NNSA’s interim director, Teresa Robbins, issued a memo reversing 72% of the layoffs. The memo sent a few days after the firings, reinstated the majority of the affected employees, including those working on crucial nuclear projects. However, the chaos did not end there. Many of the reinstated employees found themselves unable to return to their posts due to administrative issues, and 28 individuals were not reinstated at all.

This includes the development of new intercontinental ballistic missiles, stealth bombers, and nuclear warheads. Rob Plonski, NNSA’s deputy director, voiced his concerns publicly, stating, “This is a pivotal moment. We need to decide whether we are truly committed to leading on the global stage or if we will continue to undermine the very systems that ensure the future security of our nation.”
