Before the intense exchange in the Oval Office, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was confronted with a question about his attire, which foreshadowed the tension that would later erupt during the meeting. The question posed by a conservative journalist focused on Zelensky’s decision to wear his signature combat gear rather than a more formal suit.

“Why don’t you wear a suit? Do you own a suit? A lot of Americans have a problem with you not respecting the dignity of the office”.

Zelensky, who is known for donning sweatshirts emblazoned with the Ukrainian trident symbol, typically wears this attire even during high-stakes meetings with world leaders. He seemed unfazed by the question and responded with characteristic calm.

“I will wear (a) costume after this war will finish,” he told the reporter. “Maybe something like yours, maybe something better… Maybe something cheaper.”

The question came from Brian Glenn, the Chief White House Correspondent for Real America’s Voice, a right-wing network known for its Trump-friendly programming.

It’s unclear whether Zelensky’s response was intended to be cheeky or simply a matter of translation. In Ukrainian, the word for “suit” – “kostyum” – can carry a broader range of meanings, so his answer may have been more playful than it appeared.

Regardless, the press conference swiftly moved on without further comment.

However, the issue of respect, particularly about appearance, would resurface minutes later in the Oval Office, contributing to the escalating tensions between Zelensky, President Trump, and Vice President Vance. This seemingly innocuous wardrobe question set the stage for the full-blown argument that would follow, highlighting the deep divides in the diplomatic discourse.
