Eva Longoria, best known for her role in Desperate Housewives, has left the United States for a new life in Spain with her husband José Bastón, a Mexican businessman, and their son, Santiago. The actress has sold her Beverly Hills home and is now dividing her time between Mexico and Marbella, Spain.

The pivotal moment for Longoria came after the election of Donald Trump as president. “It was over for me,” she admitted, explaining that the political climate in the U.S. became unbearable. “I’m lucky. I can escape, but many Americans don’t have that option. They will stay trapped in this dystopian country, and my sadness and anxiety are for them,” she added, reflecting on her decision to leave.

In addition to her move, Longoria is starring in the upcoming CNN series Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain, set to air on April 27. In the series, she travels across Spain to explore its unique culture and culinary traditions.

“Eleven generations ago, one of my ancestors left Spain for the New World and a new life. 400 years later, I return to see how the land and its people have created one of the most exciting cuisines in the world,” Longoria says in the trailer for the show.

While she’s quick to praise the beauty and rich history of the U.S., Longoria didn’t hold back her criticism of the country’s direction. “It’s not surprising that he won,” she said about Trump’s election. “A convicted criminal who spews so much hatred could occupy the highest office.”

Longoria, however, doesn’t want to speak ill of the place she lived in for most of her adult life but admits the political environment had changed dramatically even before the pandemic. “The atmosphere was different, and COVID pushed it to the limit.

Whether it’s the lack of housing or taxes, I don’t want to criticize California, but I feel like this chapter of my life is done.”

With her move abroad, Longoria has found a new sense of purpose, embracing her heritage while reflecting on the political and social landscape that influenced her decision to leave.
