Derek Jeter attended his first professional soccer game to see Lionel Messi play in Inter Miami’s Round of 32 clash with Orlando City in the Leagues Cup, as the former Yankees slugger revealed that David Beckham invited ahead of Wednesday’s game.
Jeter, 49, is well connected to Florida sports after spending more than four years as the Miami Marlins’ CEO before resigning last season.
The Baseball Hall of Famer is the latest influential figure to get a first-hand look at the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 World Cup champion.
LeBron James, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian were among A-listers who saw Messi score a decisive goal for his new club in his Inter Miami debut last month.
‘I was invited by David (Beckham) and Jorge Mas. I don’t have a deep relationship with David but I’ve been watching what he’s been doing from afar,’ said Jeter during Apple TV’s coverage of Miami’s domestic cup match on Wednesday night.

‘Obviously I’ve been down in Miami for years and it’s pretty exciting for him and Jorge. I’m happy for them and the city of Miami.’
Although he’s mostly associated with winning five World Series with the Yankees from his 19-year career in New York (1995-2014), the shortstop admitted to have tried his hand at other sports during his childhood, including the beautiful game.
‘I tried to play soccer when I was younger,’ Jeter said. ‘But I was terrible at it… and I have not been to a professional soccer match so I’m looking forward to it.’

Jeter can only hope to witness a magical moment created by Messi in his first soccer game in the stands of DRV PNK Stadium.
‘I think everyone is obviously excited with Messi here. He’s arguably one of the greatest players to ever play. He’s the talk of the town,’ said the 14-time All-Star.
‘I’m just looking forward to getting the chance to watch him play. When you play professional sports, you’re a fan of all sports.
‘You have respect and admiration for them.’
