Xavi PLEADS with Barcelona hierarchy to make one final effort to keep Ousmane Dembele with winger’s contract set to expire and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel keen on reunion with France star
- Xavi has asked Barcelona’s hierarchy to try and keep winger Ousmane Dembele
- The French winger’s Barcelona contract is set to expire at the end of this month
- Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with the 25-year-old
- Xavi and coaching staff fear they may miss out on some of their desired signings
Barcelona coach Xavi has asked the club’s hierarchy to make a final effort to keep Ousmane Dembele.
The France international has impressed his boss since January and remains Xavi’s prime target to hold down Barcelona’s right wing position.
Sportsmail understands that Xavi and his coaching staff fear they could miss out on some of their desired signings as they wait for the club to close the sale of stakes in their marketing licensing and merchandise assets plus TV rights.

The concern is, that with time pressing and rivals circling, they will lose the chance to re-sign Dembele, who is free from July 1, or another proven winger such as Leeds United’s £60million-rated Raphinha who is now talking to Arsenal.
While a four year contract for exciting 17-year-old Gavi is being finalised, Barca have also told 20-year-old Abde that he will figure in their first team plans for next season. Also, sales, such as that of Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United, have become the priority so that any funds are pushed forward to help Joan Laporta deliver his promise of signing Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

With funds going towards a move for Robert Lewandowski, Barca have little left for a winger
The Barca president had also hoped to deliver Bernardo Silva from Manchester City – potentially in a swap for de Jong – but that is highly unlikely with Pep Guardiola wanting the Portuguese midfield maestro to stay while talks are advanced for City to sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds instead.
With funds going towards a second bid for Lewandowski this week, Barca have little left with which to deliver a winger. Xavi knows that a contract for Dembele would make good economic sense with Raphinha seemingly slipping out of financial reach.
Dembele, 23, has interest from the likes of Chelsea and Paris St Germain but talks with those clubs are still to advance as he waits to see if Barca act upon Xavi’s requests.
