Utah mom finds out she accidentally married her COUSIN while she was pregnant

A Utah business owner and mom has revealed the shocking moment she found out she ‘accidentally married her cousin’ – having already fallen pregnant with his baby.

Marcella Hill, 42, shared the revelation about her and her husband, Tage, to her almost 300,000 followers on TikTok last Monday.

‘So I’ve never publicly told anyone but I accidentally married my cousin,’ she begins the video, which has been viewed almost one million times.

‘I was sitting on the couch looking for names for the baby that we were about to have and I was on [genealogy site] FamilySearch.’

Marcella, who is CEO of Love Woolies and author of Wake Her Up, said she was looking at the names of her grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother when she realized something was amiss.

‘Husband’s next to me on his own FamilySearch and he’s like, “Oh that’s funny, we have the same grandma and grandpa’s names,’ she said.

‘I look at this line and it’s all the same as mine. So I think, “Oh no no, you’re still logged into my account.”

‘Then we start looking at it and we realize my grandpa is his grandma’s first cousin.’

The couple, who have a blended family with four children and will celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary in March, then called their respective grandparents to ask them if they knew each other.

As it turns out, their suspicions were right on the money – and the couple soon learned that they actually have the same great-great-grandparents, making them third cousins.

‘We both called our grandparents to ask if they knew each other. They did,’ Marcella told DailyMail.com.

‘My grandpa said, “Ya, the girl with the long braids.” And Tage’s grandma said, “Yes, he was the good kid.” They had spent some of their childhood living together.’

As soon as they made the discovery, Marcella said she and her husband ‘immediately’ Googled ‘the risks of having a child with your third cousin… feeling suddenly as if we had done something totally unacceptable [without] knowing.’

‘Google reassured us with this: ‘The researchers suggest marrying third and fourth cousins is so optimal for reproduction because they sort of have the “best of both worlds,”‘ she said, citing a Live Science story.

Marcella also revealed in her TikTok the couple had previously won a prize for ‘being the closest related in a neighborhood activity.’

‘And when I go to my family reunion, he gets to go to his too at the same time,’ she added.

Some people questioned how the couple didn’t find out before that moment.

‘How didn’t y’all realize this at the wedding?’ one person queried.

Another added: ‘Wait how did y’all not know this beforehand?! Your grandparents weren’t at the wedding?’

Marcella responded to these comments in another TikTok video, saying: ‘We got married at a courthouse after work on a Wednesday.’

She continued: ‘Let’s say we had the wedding, and my grandpa and his grandma were there, and we found out that we were third cousins at the wedding, what were supposed to do?’

But others didn’t really see the big deal, considering they were third cousins.

‘That’s far enough apart lol. Crazy coincidence though,’ one TikTok user said.

‘3rd cousins are pretty far removed,’ someone else wrote.

Another joked: ‘Say you’re from Utah without saying you’re from Utah.’

A handful of social media users also thought Marcella should have kept this piece of news to herself.

‘I think you should have just not told anyone,’ one person said.

And it also appears Marcella isn’t the only one to accidentally marry a distant relative.

‘Ancestry taught my husband and I that we are 8th cousins. Barely count as cousins but still was a shock,’ a TikTok user wrote.

‘My husband’s parents were 5th cousins. I laughed when I heard this from his mom (don’t think she liked my laugh),’ another said.
