Toronto’s police chief is set to unveil the force’s plan to address gun and gang violence in the city.
The federal, provincial and municipal governments will provide $4.5 million in immediate funding to Toronto police.
Chief Mark Saunders has said a recent spate of shootings is largely gang-related. The number of shootings in the city has increased significantly since 2014.
Sources told CBC Toronto on Tuesday that part of the plan will involve reassigning 45 major crimes personnel from 17 divisions to the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force.
The additional officers will remain with the task force until Thanksgiving, the source added.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said gun control will become an election issue as the coming campaign looms, but has yet to detail the Liberals’ plan.
