- It had been thought that WWE were building to CM Punk facing Seth Rollins
- The pair had faced off last year, with Rollins clashing with Gunther on Monday
- Punk, meanwhile, went head-to-head with Rhodes on Raw in a tense face off
The top matches for this year’s WrestleMania have been leaked, according to a report.
The road to WrestleMania is almost underway, and will kick into gear at the Royal Rumble this weekend when the company will crown two contenders for two top championships following the men’s and women’s Rumble matches.
Some of the top contenders for the men’s match include Cody Rhodes, CM Punk and The Rock, with two of the three men expected to go onto face World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns in he main events at April’s show.
Most of the debate has focused on Reigns’ challenger, with it reportedly looking likely he will take on The Rock rather than Rhodes in the main event following the former’s return at the start of the year.
Other stars on the show may not face who many thought they would, however . According to a report from Sports Illustrated, sources close to WWE boss Triple H have said that there will be a number of surprise match-ups on the show.
Seth Rollins will reportedly have a surprise challenger for his World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania
Cody Rhodes (left) and CM Punk (right), meanwhile, will not get their dream main event matches, if the report is to be believed
Rhodes and Punk will instead reportedly go head-to-head against each other following their face-off on Monday
It had looked likely that Rollins would face CM Punk amid sporadic teases since Punk’s return in November, with Rollins visibly angry at the Survivor Series event, having to be held back, and the two facing off in December and expressing their dislike for each other.
Rollins, however – if he returns from injury in time – is reportedly set to instead face current Intercontinental Champion Gunther on the back of their face-off pm Raw this week.
That could mean Gunther could be set to win the men’s Rumble match on Saturday, whereas many thought it would be Punk or Rhodes.
Those two men went head-to-head in a heated promo on Monday, starting off paying their respects to each other’s careers before ending with a tense face off.
According to the report, the head-to-head will set up a match between the two at WrestleMania, in a shock twist that would see a match sure to split fans between two of the most popular stars in the company.
Gunther (left) is said to be the man that will face Rollins for his title, with the two also facing off on Monday
The report also states that Roman Reigns (left) will defend his title against The Rock (right)
It had been unclear for a while whether Rhodes or The Rock would challenge Reigns for his title following the latter’s return to the company.
The Rock has admitted that he intends to main event ‘the biggest WrestleMania of all time’ against Reigns, but it has been unclear if that would be this year or next.
If Rhodes is pre-occupied, however, then it will almost certainly be ‘The Great One’ who faces his real-life cousin on the second night of the event, despite his insistence he wanted to ‘build the long-game’.
