Today’s teenage stars are so much more polished than their noughties predecessors

Whether it’s Millie Bobby Brown strutting down the BAFTAs red carpet in custom Louis Vuitton, Olivia Rodrigo turning heads in corseted Vivenne Westwood or Landon Barker wowing in a classic Dolce & Gabanna suit, today’s teen stars appear to have skipped the awkward phase and look mature and poised on the red carpet.

While many have teams behind them to help create the looks, some of the world’s most highly-acclaimed fashion icons of today didn’t have so much help when they were starting out their career, and will now look back at red carpets from the noughties and cringe at their looks from years past.

Blake Lively, now 34,  is now a chair of the Met Gala who is often praised for her effortless style and gorgeous looks, but one of her most famous moments saw her opt for jeans, and tank top and semi-sheer pink crop top to the 2005 Kid’s Choice Awards when she was 18.

Speaking to Vogue earlier this month,  Blake revealed she ‘doesn’t think the look is horrendous’ and that her mum ‘found the top at Forever 21’, while the jeans were from noughties stalwart Abercrombie & Fitch and her shoes were from Aldo.

The high street look is a stark comparison from what many teen stars wear today, where they often work with designers and  celebrity stylists sporting  bespoke suits and couture gowns for those Instagrammable red carpet moments.

Selena Gomez is now one of the most followed people on Instagram, but at 16-year-old (pictured in 2008) she looked more dressed for a day at the office than the red carpet. While today she rarely raises eyebrows, Ashley Tisdale put herself on the worst dressed list as she mocked an outfit that she wore to the 2005 premiere of Ice Princess in a video shared to her TikTok earlier this year.

The star, then 19 and a darling of the Disney Channel, was seen wearing a white graphic-printed Bebe T-shirt on top of a turquoise undershirt in the throwback shot – and joked in her TikTok that it looked like she had ‘decided to wear everything in my closet.’

Piling on the different layers, the High School Musical cast member also rocked a pair of slightly loose-fitting blue jeans worn underneath a sparkling gold skirt.

Nowdays, looks delivered by teen stars are iconic fashion moments, that leave editors and designers looking on in awe.

Popular culture expert Nick Ede told FEMAIL the looks now are ‘less authentic’ because stars now want to look ‘measured, stylish and like they have a team behind them’.

He explained: ’15 years ago our teen stars were not the polished style icons of today they were awkwardly dressed and made for awkward viewing.

‘Nowadays our teen sensations never put a stylish foot wrong, they are glamourous and dress so well they shade some blockbuster stars in the process.

‘They also don’t seem to look awkward, they embrace their styles, looks, sexual identity and attitude in a grown up but grounded manner.

‘The child stars of the 00’s and 10’s are a different breed and look like they were given no direction in how to look or pose even so end up looking as if they have watched too many reruns of The Simple Life or still think they are in the Mickey Mouse Club.

‘It’s crazy to think that only 15 years have passed but the fashion forward stars of today know that the more polished and sophisticated they are the more endorsements they will get and the more lucrative their careers will be.

‘It isn’t about popping on some double denim with a slip of colour and just hope the paps like it its about being measured, stylish and having a team behind you.

‘I am not personally sure I like the polished look as it doesn’t really feel quite as authentic as a teen trying to work out their looks for.

‘A red carpet event but I do see that nowadays its not just about the magazines teens use their social media for all aspects of their lives and from an early age now they are creating a brand with consistency and star power
