The Project: Carrie Bickmore asks Julie Bishops if she’s ever sent an eggplant emoji to a PM

Awkward moment Carrie Bickmore asks Julie Bishops if she’s ever sent an eggplant emoji to a PM: ‘Your DMs must be fascinating’

Julie Bishop has opened up about her saucy private messages and how she frequently receives eggplant emojis – used to represent penises – from amorous admirers.

Appearing on The Project on Tuesday, the former foreign minister weighed in a segment about a new study of 1400 global office workers that found most people find messages are lacking if they do not have an emojis.

However, the survey found 58 per cent of respondents could not tell what emojis mean and were unaware they could have multiple meanings.

In response to the findings, Ms Bishop told the panel: ‘I just think take the literal meaning – don’t mull over the meanings.’

‘If someone sends me a ‘hey Julie check out my eggplant’, I mean, it is an eggplant, right?’

‘So that means they are at the supermarket.’

The joke elicited some laughs from the audience – and raised the eyebrows of host Peter Helliar.

‘Bit of fruit and vege chat?’ Waleed Aly offered.

‘Well hang on – it’s a big piece of fruit, not a vegetable,’ Ms Bishop continued.

Enthralled, Carrie Bickmore said Ms Bishop must send and receive some very interesting private messages.

‘Wow your DMs [direct messages] must be fascinating,’ Bickmore said.

‘Have you ever sent an eggplant to a PM?’

Ms Bishop erupted in laughter before responding, ‘pardon?’

Bickmore continued: ‘Well you may have been shopping and… you know?’

‘Oh no, I’m a recipient, I’m not a giver of eggplants,’ Ms Bishop chuckled.

‘But you like shopping?’ Bickmore jested.

Ms Bishop replied: ‘I think I am blushing’.

More to come.
