The station’s owners, Sports Entertainment Network (SEN), will shut off the signal from 6pm, reports Radio Today.

2CH had been broadcasting across Sydney for 90 years.

SEN management told staff via email on Thursday they had decided to close the music station so the network could focus on sports broadcasting.

Much loved by nostalgia buffs, 2CH was one of the first of Sydney’s original AM stations to transition to exclusive digital broadcasting on the DAB+ platform.

Its music programming, which featured hits from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, was also streamed online.

SEN bought 2CH from EON Broadcasting for $11million in 2020, and since then 2CH has struggled in the ratings, reaching 66,000 DAB+ listeners in the latest survey.

Meanwhile, SEN’s sports channel was not doing much better, scoring just 68,000 (AM and DAB+) listeners in the third ratings survey this year.

SEN, which began in Victoria as 3AK, bought the 2CH license in order to access a Sydney metro audience, reports Mediaweek.

SEN has made a similar move in Queensland. Brisbane’s classic hits station 4QK was recently purchased by SEN, and will rebrand as SENQ from July 1 as a sports station.

2CH began broadcasting on the AM dial in 1932, and in its 90 years has been home to many beloved veterans of Sydney radio, including Tim Webster and Bob Rodgers.

Rodgers, 95, worked for 2CH as an announcer for 25 years until his retirement in 2020.

Among 2CH’s popular shows were programs devoted to legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and The Beatles.
