The couple then celebrated with close friends at Robert de Niro’s upmarket Manhattan steakhouse, Laconda Verde.

The famously quick-witted TV star described the wedding as a ‘court house’ quickie – a reference to the HBO hit Sex in the City.

In a touching message on his Instagram page, the handsome journalist praised local laws allowing gay marriage.

Nelson announced his engagement to Jonny during a cabaret show in Perth in October, 2022.

Nelson had travelled to WA for the Perth Telethon, which raised $71million for sick children, and for a series of live shows to promote his new book.

‘We are planning a Carrie Bradshaw-style “courthouse quickie”,’ Nelson said of his plans for the wedding, which he expects will take place next year.

He told the Daily Mail Australia he and Jonny, who works in finance, were considering buying a house in Perth.

Nelson specifically has his eyes on the Elizabeth Quay development.

It comes after Nelson threw open the doors of his jaw-dropping New York City penthouse, having spent the last two years building his dream home in the heart of Harlem.

Nelson, who resigned as Sunrise’s showbusiness correspondent in July after 19 years on the air, started from a blank canvas with no walls, windows or wiring after buying off the plan in 2020.
