Sophie Ellis-Bextor reveals hilarious (and clueless!) questions she is asked about Murder On The Dancefloor after THAT Saltburn scene landed the 2001 track back in charts

Her 2001 hit Murder On The Dancefloor has clattered back into the charts due to the success of edgy thriller Saltburn.

And Sophie Ellis-Bextor appears to be nothing short of perplexed by the newfound success of the track, as she appeared on Lorraine on Friday morning.

The singer, 44, revealed she has been asked ‘how she came up with the song for the movie’ – before having to explain the song is in fact 22 years old.

The hit movie stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant and is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell.

And in the very last scene of the film, Barry’s character Oliver dances around a mansion totally naked, while the song plays in the background – something Sophie revealed she watched with her son Sonny, 19.

Sophie detailed how she was approached while attending the premiere for the film in November, saying: ‘They invited me and [husband] Richard to DJ and I sung at the party and people asked, “How did you come up with the song for the movie”…

‘I was like, “No you don’t understand it’s a very old song of mine having a new adventure”.’

She also revealed she watched the saucy film with her son and her famous mother Janet Ellis – much to Sonny’s dismay: ‘I did feel for my son sat between my mum and his grandma having to watch the film’.

Earlier this week, Sophie managed to climb to the top of Spotify charts in the United States after her hit song featured in the Amazon movie.

Fans have obsessed over the new movie on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter, leading Sophie’s Platinum-certified song to shoot up the charts.

Sophie shared with her fans the great news, thanking viewers for playing the song over and over again since the movie was released. Sharing a picture of the album on X, formerly known as Twitter, she wrote: ‘xxxxxx thankyou!’

The film follows an apparently working-class Oxford University student from Merseyside, played by Barry, 31, who becomes infatuated with upper-class student Felix, played by Jacob, 26.

The song’s second run at chart success comes after Sophie performed her own version of the Saltburn ending scene to celebrate New Year’s Eve on Sunday.

She looked incredible in a multicoloured sequin dress as she kicked and writhed her way down the stairs in time to the song in a TikTok video.

Sophie spoke with Pink News in November about her song being used in the film, saying: ‘I really loved the movie.

‘It’s funny because whenever you get asked about having a song involved in something, you always get a tiny synopsis or rough idea of placement. I just thought it was brilliant. It’s so beautifully shot.

The script is bouncy and fun and sharp and witty, and then you get someone dancing full frontal nude to my song. I can’t wait for more people to see it. It’s quite an unexpected moment.’
