SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: It’s bling ‘n’ buy as Joan Collins’ jewels go under the hammer

Just six months ago, Dame Joan Collins auctioned five trinkets from her jewellery box and raised a staggering £200,000 for her Shooting Star Children’s Hospices charity.

Now the Dynasty diva is getting rid of a few more glitzy knick-knacks which will go under the hammer at Bonhams Fine Jewellery sale next month. ‘I buy jewellery for myself as a reward,’ the actress says of her collection. ‘I think more women should do it — you don’t have to wait for men.’

Although this time round she is including items bought for her by men — several, in fact — including two of her ex-husbands . . . and a former fiance.

There’s a stunning coral and gold brooch which was a birthday present from her second husband, the late actor Tony Newley. ‘I had to drop a lot of hints for that,’ she says. It is estimated to fetch between £3,000-£4,000.

And a gold bracelet worth £2,000 which was a gift from husband number three.

‘This was given to me by my husband Ron Kass, father of my daughter Katyana,’ Joan explains. ‘He gave me this gorgeous gold bracelet when I was in hospital having just given birth to Katy in 1972.’

There’s also a glamorous gold and turquoise necklace given to her by Warren Beatty, to whom she was briefly engaged in 1960.

‘We were living in New York in the apartment of Paul and Joanne Newman, and Warren had just landed a role in Splendour In The Grass,’ Joan recalls. The item has an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

‘I do hope my jewels in the sale will inspire women. Now we are edging into a more normal life, aren’t we all looking forward to putting on a fabulous frock, piling on jewellery and plunging into the fray?’

She isn’t including any gems given to her by her current (fifth) hubby, producer Percy Gibson. In the November sale, several pieces went for five times their estimate — so perhaps she can afford to hang onto Percy’s baubles for a while longer.

Despite his chipper presence on screen, chat show host Graham Norton admits there’s more to him than meets the eye.

‘I hope I’m not emotionally distant, but at the same time, things tend not to crush me,’ he says.

‘Whether that’s because I’m very sane and well-adjusted, or I’m just cold and dead inside, I don’t know. It’s a coping mechanism I guess.’

Ginger Spice is in the black

Spice Girl Geri Horner enjoyed a £200,000 pay-day as she continues to enjoy the success of the pop group’s sell-out reunion tour.

Newly filed accounts for her business, Wonderful Productions, show she’s cash and asset rich after the band got back together in 2019.

Her bank account boasts a healthy £2.5 million in cash and nearly £1 million more in investments and money owed to her. But, after creditors were paid, she was left with just under £3.1 million, slightly down on the previous year.

Geri, 48, is married to Christian Horner, principal of Red Bull’s Formula 1 team, and has two children.

The Royals’ favourite choirmaster, John Rutter, has created an app to bring choral music to the masses.

Best known for his work with The Cambridge Singers, Rutter’s anthem, This Is The Day, was performed at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding.

He hopes to hit the right note with ChoirGuides, an online tool for choir singers to learn their music. How’s that for ancient and modern!

Have you been in my wardrobe, mummy?

While most daughters past a certain age tend to avoid looking like their mothers, hotel heiress Nicky Hilton is proud to look identical to hers.

The 37-year-old wife of British banking scion James Rothschild wore a £3,000 Valentino floral cape dress in New York last week, just three days before her mother Kathy, 62, sported the same design for dinner in Los Angeles.

Kathy, who is married to Hilton Hotel founder Conrad Hilton’s grandson, Richard, doesn’t say if she borrowed the outfit from Nicky, but reveals that she and her daughters — including ‘party girl’ Paris — often share clothes.

‘They make themselves very at home in my closet,’ she says, adding, ‘I don’t buy anything, and they don’t, unless we all agree on it.’

Pregnant India shocks knifeman

Prince Charles’s goddaughter India Hicks has revealed the horrifying moment she faced a knife-wielding man while going into labour with her first child, Felix, exactly 24 years ago.

It happened as she and her partner, David Flint Wood, were en route to hospital in Miami.

They stopped at a petrol station for David to buy cigarettes. ‘Unbeknown to me a homeless dude with a knife had wandered into the forecourt, says Hicks. ‘I got out so I could double over on the bonnet to ease a contraction. The store attendant banged on the window to try to warn me to get back inside the car.

‘The knife-wielding dude took one look at this pregnant woman lying on the front of the car, clearly about to give birth, and turned and left as quick as he could.

‘We made it to the hospital just in time. Felix arrived, changing our lives forever — and for the better.

‘And David gave up smoking.’

Abbie’s first date after burns horror

Former Strictly professional A.J. Pritchard had a spring in his step when he and his girlfriend, fellow dancer Abbie Quinnen, went for a date in the West End this week.

Not only were they celebrating the re-opening of the hit musical, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, but it was their first night out since Abbie, 24, suffered third-degree burns in January after a blazing wine bottle exploded in her face as she tried to re-enact a stunt on YouTube. ‘I’m so excited to be back at the theatre,’ Abbie said.

The show stars Shane Richie, who became friends with Pritchard, 26, on I’m A Celebrity last year.

Boy George once had a disagreement with former musician Professor Brian Cox over astrology. It was about star signs,’ recalls Boy George.

‘He said: “What a load of old rubbish,” and I was like: “Brian. That is like saying there is no wizard behind the curtain. That is very pessimistic.” He said: “They are an abomination to science.” That is a typical Pisces.’
