A rugby player found half naked in a gutter will require plastic surgery after he was allegedly assaulted by four men.

Matia Vibote was in Melbourne’s CBD last Saturday night when the quintet of thugs bashed him.

The motive for the alleged attack remains unknown, with Mr Vibote’s wallet, shirt and shoes also taken from the scene.

A long term member of the Harlequin Rugby Club in Malvern East, Mr Vibote was rushed to hospital with significant injuries to his face and body.

President Brock Parker said the club was in utter shock that one of their most popular players had been violently set upon.

‘Matia is not a small bloke and is a very imposing strong man, so for him to get (allegedly) bashed was a major surprise as he could no doubt look after himself in a scrap,’ he told the Herald Sun.

‘To hear he was left in the gutter (allegedly) bashed with just his jeans on after they (thugs) took his possessions…including his shirt and shoes, was a horrible thought.’

Mr Parker also labelled the thugs ‘cowards.’

Earlier this week, a GoFundMe page was established online to help Mr Vibote on his road to recovery.

More than $7000 has already been raised, with the man affectionately known as ‘Tia’ expected to be off work ‘for some time.’

The fundraising page also stated the four alleged offenders were arrested following the incident.
