Rio Ferdinand SLAMS referee for overturning ‘stonewall penalty’ for Inter Milan

Rio Ferdinand SLAMS referee for overturning ‘stonewall penalty’ for Inter Milan in their Champions League semi final against arch-rivals AC Milan, while Steve McManaman is ‘amazed’ by the decision

Rio Ferdinand and Steve McManaman were shocked by the decision to overturn a penalty awarded to Inter Milan during Wednesday’s Champions League clash with AC Milan.

Simon Kjaer brought down Lautaro Martínez inside the AC Milan box after half an hour and referee Jesus Gil Manzano immediately pointed to the spot and booked the defender.

However, VAR asked him to consult his monitor to check his monitor, and the referee decided to rescind the penalty and Kjaer’s red card.

Ferdinand called the incident a ‘stonewall’ penalty after it was overturned after the referee was asked to consult his monitor by VAR.

Steve McManaman said he was ‘amazed’ by the decision, and a number of the Inter Milan players seemed to agree.

Inter were 2-0 up at the time, and would have gone out of sight with a third goal so early in the tie.
