Premier League WILL be allowed to reschedule postponed games during January international break

FIFA confirms Premier League WILL be allowed to reschedule postponed games during January international break… but clubs MUST release players who have been called up

  • FIFA to give English top-flight green light to clear backlog of postponed games
  • Just three of the 18 postponed Premier League fixtures have been rescheduled
  • Clubs will still have to release players called up by their international sides

The Premier League will be allowed to reschedule postponed matches during the international break at the end of this month.

It was the plan for top-flight football to take a break between January 24 and February 2, when non-European international matches will be played.

However, FIFA have confirmed that, as long as clubs release called-up players, they will not stop the Premier League arranging games during this period.

It is likely that would need the agreement of the clubs involved given they could have players away on international duty.

But with just three of the 18 postponed fixtures having been rescheduled so far, it is an option the league will now be considering.

Despite the backlog, many clubs have only two Premier League matches scheduled between now and the second week in February, given FA Cup weekends and the international break.

It is normally the case that top-flight domestic football is prohibited during international windows, but a FIFA spokesperson said: ‘The release of players is mandatory for all international windows listed in the international match calendar.

‘Therefore, should clubs and leagues decide to play on those dates they would not be able to feature any player who has been called up/is on international duty.’
