In response to escalating tensions with Russia, NATO member Poland is taking proactive steps to prepare its population for potential crises, including military conflicts.
The Polish government has announced that it will distribute a survival guide to households this year, outlining how to navigate various emergencies ranging from power outages to natural disasters. This initiative is especially significant as Poland shares borders with both Russia and Ukraine, making it a key player in the ongoing geopolitical conflict.
The pamphlets, which will be issued in both Polish and Ukrainian, are designed to provide civilians with crucial information on how to manage hazardous situations such as prolonged power outages or natural catastrophes.
In a move that reflects Poland’s commitment to inclusivity, a special version of the guide will also be created for children, ensuring that the youngest citizens are informed about safety measures during emergencies.
Poland’s commitment to national security has been heightened by the ongoing war in Ukraine. As one of Ukraine’s strongest allies in the European Union, Poland has been instrumental in providing military and humanitarian aid to the embattled nation.

Prime Minister Tusk stressed the importance of modernizing Poland’s defense capabilities, particularly in the realm of nuclear and unconventional weapons, as the nation seeks to safeguard its security in an increasingly unpredictable global environment. “This is a race for security, not for war,” Tusk emphasized, underlining the urgency of strengthening Poland’s defense system.
Poland is not alone in its heightened defense preparations. Other European Union countries, including Sweden and Finland, have also ramped up efforts to ensure their citizens are ready for various emergencies.
Sweden has already issued a similar survival guide, while Finland has developed a website to help its population prepare for different crises. The European Union, alarmed by Russia’s aggressive stance, recently agreed to bolster the continent’s defense capabilities, allocating hundreds of billions of euros for security measures.
In the backdrop of these developments, the United States has shifted its position on its support for Ukraine, with a recent pause in intelligence-sharing with Kyiv. However, U.S. officials have clarified that defensive intelligence remains available to Ukrainian forces, ensuring that Ukraine continues to receive essential information to defend itself.
