A major incident unfolded in Sydney’s inner west on Wednesday afternoon when a 10-story building partially collapsed at a demolition site in Burwood, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of office workers and residents.

The collapse occurred just after 3 p.m., with parts of the structure falling onto an excavator stationed at the site.

Remarkably, a worker inside the excavator’s cabin escaped injury and remains safe. However, authorities have instructed him to stay inside for now, as the vehicle is currently supporting the unstable building and preventing further collapse.

Efforts to Stabilize the Structure

Fire Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Superintendent Josh Turner explained the critical role of the excavator:

“The excavator was put into position to support the building and the scaffolding. It’s there as a precaution—if the structure starts to move, it can take a bit of the load and mitigate the risk of further collapse.”

Turner reassured the public that the worker in the excavator was not in immediate danger, as the cabin offered a level of protection. “Ideally, excavators aren’t meant to have buildings collapse on them, but he is safe within the enclosed cabin,” he added.

Incident Response and Evacuations

The incident has drawn a significant emergency response, with Fire and Rescue NSW deploying specialist crews, including heavy rescue units, to the site. Acting Superintendent Mat Sigmund confirmed that engineers and experts are assessing the situation to devise a safe plan for managing the fallen sections of the building.

“This will be an ongoing operation,” Sigmund stated. “We are working with structural engineers to ensure the stability of the site and prevent any harm to the surrounding area.”

In the meantime, NSW Police have cordoned off the area to protect the public, as concerns remain about the potential for debris to fall onto nearby roads or pedestrians.

Cause of the Collapse

Preliminary investigations suggest that the building became unstable during the demolition process, leading to the partial collapse. Scaffolding attached to the structure was also compromised, adding to the risks at the site.

While the incident has caused significant disruption in the Burwood area, authorities have confirmed that there are no reports of injuries apart from the worker still inside the excavator. Efforts to secure the area and stabilize the building are ongoing, and updates will follow as the situation develops.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in demolition projects and the importance of strict safety protocols to prevent such occurrences.
