Nick Kyrgios slammed for ‘pitiful’ message to Rafael Nadal after Australian Open 2024 withdrawal just days before the tournament starts:  ‘This guy has to make it about him’

Nick Kyrgios has empathised with Rafael Nadal’s injury woes after the tennis star’s Australian Open bombshell on Sunday, but his message has not gone down well with fans.

Nadal, 37, announced he will not participate in this year’s tournament after suffering ‘a small problem’ during the Brisbane International this week.

This setback is the latest of a string of injuries that have hampered the all-conquering Spaniard during his illustrious career, with his hip problem in 2023 leaving his coaches concerned he might not hit the court again.

And Kyrgios, who had to withdraw from the tournament himself with a wrist problem, said he understood Nadal’s predicament entirely.

‘Feel for Rafa man,’ he posted on Twitter. ‘Get better soon, that was the fear for me as well, coming back a little too soon…’

But while some fans wished for the pair to face each other on the court once again, others were somewhat unfairingly criticial of Kyrgios’s message.

‘At least think once before comparing yourself with the great Rafael Nadal,’ one fan said.

Another added: ‘Because it’s all about you’.

‘Is there anything you won’t be making about yourself?!’ a third fan asked.

‘This is not about you!’ said a fourth troll.

The 28-year-old had a bumper 2022 season, reaching the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic and winning the Australian Open doubles with good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.

However he endured a wretched run of injuries in 2023, restricting him to just one professional matches all year, a straight sets loss to China’s Wu Yibing at the Stuttgart Open in June.

The Aussie star was not named in the main draw and confirmed on his newly created OnlyFans account that he will miss the local grand slam because of an ongoing wrist complaint.

‘Hey guys, Nick Kyrgios here, obviously had a really tough year with injury, had that knee surgery and came back a little too soon (which) set me back a little bit, obviously had some wrist issues,’ Kyrgios said.

‘So this is a very disappointing time for me but yeah I won’t be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open.

‘Obviously heartbreaking, I’ve had so many amazing memories there and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right and I need a little more time.

‘I was so close to winning a grand slam, I want to make sure that my body is going to have the time it needs to come back so please bear with me.’
