Meanwhile Julianne wore an elegant cream sweater with a long red and white plaid skirt and white heels.

Melton sported a casual cool look, wearing a black t-shirt, jacket and wide-leg grey pants.

The trio were later pictured onstage as they discussed their latest project.

May December is inspired by a woman named Mary Kay Letourneau, who was arrested in 1997 after pleading guilty to two counts of rape.

The film sees Natalie playing the role of actress Elizabeth Berry, who researches sex offender-turned-baker Gracie Atherton-Yoo, played by Julianne, in order to more authentically play her in an indie film.

The woman is infamous for her 23-year-old relationship with her husband Joe, played by Charles, whom she first met as a minor.

Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, the married couple buckles under pressure when the actress arrives to do research.

Julianne’s character is a thinly-veiled version of Letourneau, who served six years in prison for felony second-degree rape of her 12-year-old student Vili Fualaau.

The controversial couple reunited after she was released and they welcomed two daughters and eventually married.

They were married for 14 years before they separated in 2019 and Mary then passed away, at the age of 58, from colorectal cancer the following year.

To the surprise of many, the film was submitted as a comedy, however Melton shared that it ‘didn’t feel funny’ when he was filming it.

‘I think filming it, it didn’t feel – with Samy’s script, and the direction of Todd, it didn’t feel funny, it’s a pretty complex kind of script,’ the Juneau, Alaska native told The Hollywood Reporter, after the nominations were announced.
