Mystery man in suit charged with allegedly stealing a taxi and threatening driver


Well-dressed mystery man is charged with threatening a taxi driver and driving off with his cab

  • A 42-year-old man has been charged after a driver’s taxi was stolen last week
  • The Bronte man fronted up to police on Thursday after police sent his image out
  • The Silver Service taxi was allegedly taken from Hunter Street, in Sydney’s CBD
  • The Cab driver was allegedly threatened by the man at 8.50pm on November 4
  • Police released photos of the well-dressed man this week in a bid to identify him

A man has been charged after a Silver Service taxi was allegedly stolen and left with ‘significant damage’ in a bizarre incident.

The 42-year-old man approached the parked taxi on Hunter Street in Sydney’s CBD last week before allegedly damaging the vehicle, according to police.

The well-dressed stranger then allegedly threatened the cab’s 54-year-old driver, before taking off with his taxi, police alleged.

The man was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive recklessly or furiously or speed and manner dangerous-1st offence, and drive vehicle under influence of alcohol (pictured, cabs in the CBD)

The cab was then allegedly dumped in Woollahra and was left with ‘significant damage’.

Images of the handsome stranger, sporting a dark blue suit and white collared shirt, were sent out across police social media channels this week. 

The Bronte man then fronted up at Waverley Police Station at 10pm on Thursday, before he was charged.  

He was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive recklessly or furiously or speed and manner dangerous-1st offence, and drive vehicle under influence of alcohol. 

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.
