- Marvin Vettori and Paulo Costa headlined UFC Vegas 41 on Saturday night
- The bout was moved from middleweight to light-heavyweight in the build-up
- Costa failed to cut weight but still the Italian brawled his way to victory
- Vettori got the decision 48-46 by all three judges after a gruelling five rounds
Marvin Vettori punished Paulo Costa for failing to make weight at UFC Vegas 41, brawling to a hard-fought points victory over the Brazilian.
The clash was intended as a middleweight bout but Costa’s size forced the limit to be switched twice, first rising to a 195-pound catchweight clash before settling at light-heavyweight.
Vettori set a gruelling pace from the first round and absorbed plenty of punishment from the bigger man but emerged with an unanimous decision victory.

All three judges scored it 48-46, seeing Vettori overcome a chaotic fight build-up to walk away with 20 per cent of Costa’s fight purse – the Brazilian’s punishment for his ‘trick’.
‘I know I have the biggest heart, I know I have the biggest will,’ Vettori said. ‘And when it goes to the fourth and fifth rounds, there’s no way nobody can keep up.’
‘But a lot of people were saying how he’s not going to be ready — I feel a lot of it was a trick. He didn’t want to cut weight but he actually came pretty ready.
‘He should’ve made weight. It’s a respect to all of us.

‘But, you know, I get to buy myself another watch with his money, and I still got the win — and I’m proud of it.’
The size difference was apparent from the off but Vettori peppered the Brazilian, constantly pressuring him while taking some big shots.
Costa connected with a succession of head-kicks and wore his opponent down with knees and hooks to the body, but had a point wiped off in round two for poking Vettori’s eye.
Both men were defeated by Israel Adesanya in their last fights, but it was Vettori who triumphed to put his second defeat to the current middleweight champion.
