Makeup artist who was branded ‘toucan’ by school bullies rejects boy who gave her cruel man

A makeup artist who was branded a ‘toucan’ by school bullies after breaking her nose four times finally got her own back by rejecting the same boy who gave her the cruel nickname when he asked her out after she spent $10,000 on a nose job.

Katy Crooks, 18, from Dallas, Texas, was just nine when she did a flip on a trampoline and broke her nose but it wasn’t until she was 13 that she started being ‘really badly’ bullied because of her appearance.

Incredibly, she broke it a further three times after her face was accidentally hit by a car door, a dog jumping up onto her and a can falling out of the fridge.

The teen claims ‘hurtful’ nicknames such as ‘Pinocchio’ and being cruelly told to ‘fix her nose’ left her hating looking in the mirror and using makeup to mask her ‘biggest insecurity’.

Despite having a ‘thick skin’, in a bid to stop the tormentors she had two surgeries to straighten, reshape and remove three-quarters of an inch from the length of her nose.

And the boy who gave her the cruel ‘toucan’ moniker soon regretted his actions – as she claims he confessed that he was attracted to her after she got a nose job, but Katy rejected his advances as what he had done had been too hurtful.

Katy claims that her nose job was the ‘happiest of her life’ and despite bullies still rudely remarking ‘it’s too big’ nothing can dampen her spirit given she’s now happier and more confident than ever.

‘A friend of mine started the nickname “toucan” and that was one of the worst instances of the bullying as then my entire grade started using it,’ she said.

‘When he first started it I was extremely hurt but had to play it off because he was one of my best friends. I just always laughed it off and was like “haha, that was a creative nickname, very funny”.

‘He said “I can’t believe you look like this now. I really missed my chance.. I shouldn’t have bullied you the way I did”. So he’s remorseful but is also remorseful because he’s regretful of not taking the chance with me whenever he had it.

‘When he confessed and told me that he liked me I was like ‘I can’t. I cannot like you because of how much you hurt me in the past. That’s not something I can get past’.

‘It was satisfying in a way. I was like ‘well this came full circle. It’s pretty nice to know that you regret saying that stuff.’

‘That was nice because he was such a close friend of mine. I wasn’t out for revenge, I was more just appreciative that he had matured and realised what he did was wrong.’

Katy said: ‘I had one kid and I asked him for a pencil and he was like ‘why don’t you fix your nose?’ and I was like ‘ok, that wasn’t very nice’.

‘I started getting called a whole lot of names. I got called Pinocchio a lot. There were pictures that would be taken of me at school and they would be compared to images of a toucan or Pinocchio and they would send those around on social media.

‘I’d been told countless times that my nose is too big and I had a big nose.. It was definitely these comments that made me insecure about my nose. They 110% affected my confidence.

‘One time in class there was a boy that kind of liked me at this point, I didn’t know, but I was sitting in class and he took a picture of the board and I was in the picture and said ‘oh my gosh I look gross in that’ and he said ‘yes, you always look effing disgusting’.

‘I remember I ran out of the room and had to leave school after he told me that. It was a very crushing comment and was something that affected me so much.’

Katy said: ‘I chose to put myself as the ugly friend. I just didn’t want to put any effort into myself mainly because I felt like even if it did, it wouldn’t have done anything.

‘When I looked in the mirror I hated how I looked. [My nose] was the only thing I saw in the mirror, I didn’t see any other features, just that.

‘I started doing makeup before my surgery because I used that as an escape and felt like when I did that it made me feel pretty. If I did a look that was just as distracting as my nose was, people would look at that instead. I was using makeup to cover up my biggest insecurity.

‘The comments made me feel really isolated. I felt like I was always comparing myself to others and the only thing I’d notice about people which is really weird, was their nose. I’d look at everybody’s nose when I first saw them.

‘I definitely got the nose job to stop the bullying. Which sounds like a very drastic decision but when you’ve gone through it for so many years you’re kind of willing to do whatever you can. And also just to make myself happy with how I looked, which I guess those go hand in hand.’

A year later Katy had the tip of her nose rotated another ten degrees, scar tissue removed from the tip of her nose, nostrils resized and had it shortened a further quarter of an inch.

Katy said: ‘The day of the surgery was 110% the happiest day of my life.

‘I’ll never forget the day I got the cast off. Before looking in the mirror I felt that bump was gone. It felt weird, but it was good. Then I looked in the mirror and was just so overwhelmed, I was teary eyed and couldn’t stop smiling.

‘I was hopeful that the bullying would stop. For the most part it did, but there were still people that felt the need to say that my nose was still big because they knew it would be something that hurt my feelings and that was the only thing they could think of to use against me.

‘To this day sometimes people will say something about it or give me a snide remark regarding getting plastic surgery.

‘Some of them say ‘it’s still too big’, ‘did you get a refund?’, ‘you should get another one’, ‘it doesn’t look any different’, which it 100% does.

‘It definitely hurts because it’s like ‘really I just went through that, why are you still doing this to me?’ but it never affected me the way that it had before my surgery in a sense that I’m so happy that anything negative you could say about my nose was not going to get me down.’

Katy said: ‘It’s been such a great change in my life because it made me a happier and more confident person.

‘About a month and a half after I had my surgery a teacher came up to me in the hallway and said ‘you know, this past month I’ve seen a light in you that I hadn’t seen before’. I was like ‘wow’. It didn’t just change me on the outside, people were seeing a difference in my personality.

‘It [career path] was all because I found happiness in how I looked and I wanted to bring that to other people. Even though I wasn’t going to be re-shaping their nose I was going to be enhancing certain features to make them feel beautiful and confident in how they look.

‘The bullying has been a fuel for me. Even though it really sucked at the time it’s been very eye-opening for me to learn that mean people are always going to be around and you can’t let them affect you long term because you’ll be bitter in the end, and bitterness is something you don’t want to hold onto very long.

‘If I wanted to I could still be bitter over the things that were said to me but I think that the bullying itself has made me a stronger person.

‘I’ve learned to love myself and wouldn’t have traded my story for the world. I’d go through all of that all over again, the bullying and the failure when it came to my acting career, because of how happy I am now.’
