This is the shocking moment thieves behind the wheel of a tow truck smack into six parked cars while making off with a stolen VW Beetle.
Footage shows the poorly-fastened white hatchback whipping into vehicles as it is violently pulled along Federation Road in Abbey Wood, south-east London.
Police were called at around 1pm yesterday to reports of the stolen Beetle, along with a Vauxhall Zafira, from a residential car park.
Officers found both the Beetle and the truck abandoned nearby, with sources claiming it was dumped on the Thistlebrook traveller site, although the Met has not confirmed this.
Scotland Yard’s Southeast Command unit are investigating but so far no arrests have been made.
Video taken by a bystander in Abbey Wood, south-east London, showed the tow truck hurtling down a road while the car attached to it veered to one side
Video of the chaotic getaway was shared widely on social media, prompting the police to investigate.
It showed the Beetle, which was already damaged with a missing headlight at the beginning of the video, smacking into cars as it was hauled away.
Scotland Yard said: ‘As the suspects left the scene in the tow truck, the Volkswagen, which was not properly secured to the vehicle, collided with six parked cars on both Federation Road and Congress Road.’
Viewers pointed out the unconventional method of the tow truck to pull the Beetle from the rear, causing its front wheels to veer across the tarmac.
A female bystander can be heard screaming: ‘Oh my god!’ while car alarms are triggered.
It went on to smash into three other cars on the bizarre drive down the residential street. The car careered off a parked car before slamming into the next one
Police have launched an urgent appeal for information and call on the public for witnesses.
Chief Inspector Peter Bodley said: ‘We fully understand the upset and inconvenience caused to the owners of the stolen and damaged vehicles involved in this incident and are undertaking enquiries to locate the outstanding stolen car and to identify those responsible.
‘If you witnessed any part of this incident but have not yet spoken with police please do get in touch without delay.’
A source told MailOnline the car was seen on the Thistlebrook traveller estate nearby. Scotland Yard did not confirm nor deny this when approached.
