Jamie Carragher has favoured Liverpool to win the Premier League title over Arsenal, claiming that Jurgen Klopp’s experience having won the title back in 2020 will bode in their favour.

Liverpool take on Newcastle on Monday night and have the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the league table, with Arsenal dropping to fourth place in the standings, two points behind the Merseyside outfit.

The Reds have been in flying form of late, losing just one match in their last 13 Premier League appearances. During that time, Liverpool have also claimed draws against Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

But speaking with Gary Neville and David Jones on Sky Sport’s Monday Night Football, Carragher reflected on how the Reds have improved in recent months.

The former Liverpool defender said: ‘The team’s growing. It’s getting better as the weeks go on. And I agree with Gary that Liverpool have got something Arsenal haven’t got, which is a manager who’s won the title before and has got players in that squad, who are genuinely world class players.’

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool have an edge on Arsenal in the title race because of Jurgen Klopp’s experience having won the Premier League back in 2020

Despite that, Carragher did not think that Jurgen Klopp’s current side was quite as good as the team that won the Champions League in the 2018-19 season and then lifted the league title in the 2019-20 season.

When asked what he thought about Liverpool’s title chances, he said: ‘You can’t help but look at this Liverpool team compared to the team that won the league.

‘And it’s not as good as that team. That was a unbelievable team.

‘But you then look at the facts. And this is a team who from the end of last season to right now have lost one Premier League game and thirteen.

‘That is an unbelievable record for anyone, you know, for Manchester City if they were on a roll like that right now.’

Klopp’s side have also had to deal with several injuries to key players during the course of the season, with Diogo Jota having been absent, while Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas have also recently been ruled out with injuries, leaving the German with a few selection issues in defence.

Despite that, Carragher added that he may have to give Liverpool more credit but added that he wasn’t ruling Man City out.

‘So maybe I need to start to give this team a little bit more credit and respect. But I do still feel like Man City have got the edge.

‘They are favourites for the title right now. But as Gary has mentioned, there are still little problems in Liverpool, where could they be found out? I think on the back of injuries to the two left-backs.

‘Robertson and Joel Matip now being up for the season. I do think the position they find themselves in it’s an opportunity that we can’t waste. And I do feel Liverpool have to bring a defender in January.’
