Lionel Messi shows his tough side as he confronts Philadelphia Union’s Jose Martinez in a tense exchange during Leagues Cup semifinal victory
Lionel Messi showed his tough side in Tuesday night’s win over Philadelphia Union as he stared down rival midfielder Jose Martinez in a tense exchange.
In the latter stages of the game in Philadelphia, Messi confronted the midfielder and appeared to accuse him of kicking his Miami teammate Noah Allen in the 90th minute, when he was trying to shield the ball while falling over.
Messi ran over the stand up for his teammate and cameras appeared to catch him saying ‘how are you going to kick him to the ground like that?’ as he stared the Philadelphia player down.
Messi held his stare at Martinez before the referee ran over to intervene, standing between the two players while Messi turned round and walked away.
And it was the World Cup winner who had the last laugh on Tuesday night as he scored his ninth goal in his sixth Miami game – leading his team into the Leagues Cup final in the process.

Miami took the lead through Josef Martinez in only the third minute and in the 20th, Messi doubled the lead with a brilliant goal.
Martinez had flicked the ball into his path and as he ran forward, realized he had enough time to try his luck from around 35 yards out.
His sweetly struck shot caught Union goalkeeper Andre Blake off guard and it nestled into the far corner, flying beyond the reach of the keeper.
Messi’s new Miami teammate Jordi Alba made it three and while Union got a goal back in the second half, a proper comeback never materialized and David Ruiz scored for Miami to make the victory safe.
‘We worked our way to the finals and we made it!!! We’re still on the last step,’ Messi wrote on Instagram after the game.
