Another chapter in the book about Lionel Messi’s MLS career has been written with a fantastic comeback to beat FC Dallas – and he’s already drawing comparisons to American sports stars.
As he sat in awe, remarking about Messi’s comeback from 4-2 down to draw 4-4 – then win the match on penalties, Apple TV’s Taylor Twellman drew a comparison to NFL legend Tom Brady.
Twellman pointed to an odd own-goal scored by Dallas defender Marco Farfan off the end of a Messi free kick to halve the deficit.
The longtime MLS commentator said that in addition to sheer star power, Miami, ‘also have the opposition scoring worldly goals like Marco Farfan. I don’t know what I saw – and they just make you crumble.
‘It’s eerily similar in other sports: when the great ones come in, they force you to do stuff that’s out of your element. You’re uncomfortable doing so.
Apple TV commentator Taylor Twellman compared Messi to an American sports icon
Twellman said Messi’s impact on opposition to make mistakes is similar to that of Tom Brady
Messi bagged two goals on the night – including a dramatic free kick to force penalty kicks
‘The New England Patriots did this every single time. People would see a ghost when [Bill] Belichick and Brady showed up.
‘In the four games [Messi’s played in], every single time someone [on the opposition] has seen a ghost because Messi is on the other side.’
Eerily enough, this is not the first comparison to an American sports ‘GOAT’ that Messi’s had today.
Earlier on Sunday, FC Dallas owner Dan Hunt compared Messi to NBA legend Michael Jordan.
When revealing that he was looking forward to seeing Messi play, Hunt said, ‘You’re looking at one of the two greatest players of all time in that experience. So yeah, this is a great moment for FC Dallas.’
Well, Hunt surely got to see what Messi is capable of after the Argentine essentially forced that Farfan own-goal before scoring a dramatic free kick to even the match.
Messi and Miami would eventually go on to win on penalties 5-3 to advance to the quarter finals.
