‘What’s the point in being alive?’ Laurence Fox reveals he considered taking his own life after his divorce from Billie Piper saw them locked in a bitter custody battle over their sons
Laurence Fox has spoken out on the effect his divorce from ex wife Billie Piper had on his mental health.
The actor, 41, has revealed that he considered taking his own life after the split in 2016, after nine years of marriage to the former pop star.
Laurence, who shares two children with Billie, said in a new interview that it was such a difficult time in his life that he couldn’t see ‘the point in being alive’.

Speaking to The Sunday Times Magazine, Laurence blamed the family court system for assuming women ‘are better nurturers and raisers of children’ following a lengthy custody battle with Billie over their two children – Winston, 11, and Eugene, eight.
He said: ‘Certain aspects of the family court system are difficult as a man. [It assumes women] are better nurturers and raisers of children when all of the facts are that children need both parents.
‘It’s “Believe the woman”. It’s like “No! Don’t believe the woman. Provide the evidence. Provide this evidence. Try me as a f***ing criminal, man, and let’s see how far you get.” This is a poison in our culture and it’s wrong.
‘I imagine every single divorce is like it. There’s loads of blokes top themselves because of this stuff.’
And when asked if he considered taking his own life, he added: ‘I did. Not within the marriage. Afterwards.
‘Not from the grief of the breakdown of the marriage, even though I did grieve the breakdown of the marriage, because you see it as a failure.
‘But suddenly not being a family with your children every day was the bit that sent me over the edge, and I certainly, definitely had thoughts of what’s the point in being alive?’
Moving on: Laurence has found love again with fashion designer turned photographer Sara McKinnon as they weathered the coronavirus lockdown in isolation together (pictured on April 22)
The outspoken Lewis actor says he is now over the divorce ‘in the emotional sense’ but claims the logistics of their breakup, including co-parenting, ‘never ends’.
Speaking to The Sunday Times magazine, he said: ‘[I’m through the divorce] in the emotional sense. But the logistical sense never ends.
‘As the family therapist man says: divorce is marriage on acid.’
Laurence has found love again with fashion designer turned photographer Sara McKinnon as they were pictured this month weathering the coronavirus lockdown in isolation together.
Last week the couple strolled arm-in-arm in the sunshine in colour-coordinated outfits.
Miss McKinnon, 39, opted for a black lace top and figure-hugging blue jeans while the actor reversed the look in black jeans and blue shirt, complete with designer sunglasses.
The pair met five months ago and have been spotted at several upmarket showbiz events together, including the GQ magazine fashion dinner in January.
Friends say Fox, 41, is ‘very happy’ with Miss McKinnon, the daughter of the Emmy award-winning nature documentary producer Michael McKinnon.
One said: ‘He has had a good feeling about her, it is delightful to see him happy after everything he has been through.’
