Kyle Sandilands reveals his rocky start on Australian Idol and admits Maria Hines didn’t like him – as he welcomes ex-rival back onto the show

He’s set to return to the judging panel of Australian Idol for his ninth season.

But radio titan Kyle Sandilands has revealed he initially felt like a fish out of water when he first joined the reality show back in 2005.

‘I remember the first year I ever did it, I thought: ‘F**k, what am I doing? Like, what am I supposed to say?’ the 52-year-old told The Daily Telegraph this week.

‘Marcia didn’t like me. Mark was weird and he and I would get stoned on the sly – everything was just a bit odd,’ he said, referring to his then co-judges Marcia Hines and Mark Holden.

His relationship with Marcia has completely changed since their earlier days, with the 70-year-old music veteren even returning to the rebooted franchise this season as a judge.

‘We couldn’t get her on that first [rebooted] season because she had like 9000 different RSLs that she was touring around — the woman never stops,’ Kyle said of Marcia, who will replace both outgoing judges Meghan Trainor and Harry Connick Jr.

Kyle and Marcia will host this year’s season alongside Aria-winning musician Amy Shark.

It comes after Kyle accidentally revealed his ‘epic’ Australian Idol salary live on air on his hit breakfast radio show.

In an interview with pop singer Dean Lewis, Sandilands was complaining about how much time working in television takes up when Lewis asked how much he got paid.

‘Listen, it’s clearly over a million dollars for three months work, you’d be a fool not to do it,’ he said.

After a pause, Kyle wondered whether he should have admitted the number publicly, saying ‘I don’t know how much they’re paying the others so maybe I shouldn’t have said it.’

Lewis then replied: ‘That is a lot of money, that’s actually epic.’
