Police in a standoff with a gunman with an entire suburb in lockdown after shots were fired – with residents warned not to leave their homes

A Queensland suburb has been plunged into lockdown following a standoff between police and a gunman.

Residents have been told to stay indoors after hearing shots fired at Kirwan, near Townsville, just before 9pm on Sunday.  

Emergency services have issued an emergency declaration with the situation continuing into Monday morning.

A man has barricaded himself in his home with a shotgun and rifle with police negotiators working to defuse the situation.

Locals reportedly heard multiple shots fired but it is not known whether the shots were discharged by the gunman or police.

Residents living in the exclusion zone have been told to stay indoors with police not allowing anyone in our out of the area. 

One woman recalled everyone in the area feeling ‘on edge’.

‘I’ve never been around something like this, it’s a bit wild,’ she said.

‘I am just feeling supportive, everyone is a bit on edge but we are all surrounded around each other and it’s calming everyone’s nerves.’
