Tristan Thompson is being examined by the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles in the wake of his petition for guardianship for his brother Amari Thompson, who is 17 and has special needs.
The 32-year-old Canada native was the subject of a DCFS report filed Tuesday in his petition, The Blast reported Tuesday after reviewing court docs.
Details in the case for guardianship – which the NBA player applied for last month – is under seal, as Amari is a minor, the outlet reported.
Tristan’s guardianship petition came about eight months after their mother Andrea Brooks died of a heart attack at age 53, as Khloe Kardashian and her relatives have rallied to support Tristan in helping care for his younger brother in providing shelter, care and other necessities.
Last month, Tristan was granted temporary guardianship of his younger brother Amari after the teen was left unable to care for himself after the sudden death of their mother Andrea.
The latest: Tristan Thompson, 32, is being examined by the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles in the wake of his petition for guardianship for his brother Amari Thompson, who is 17 and has special needs
Focused: Last month, Tristan was granted temporary guardianship of his younger brother Amari after the teen was left unable to care for himself after the sudden death of their mother Andrea earlier this year
Tristan said in court docs that ‘he has been providing care, maintenance, and support to Amari’ in the trying nine months since their mother’s death, The Blast reported.
On September 20, a judge granted Tristan’s petition for temporary guardianship and scheduled a hearing on permanent guardianship for November, according to an article by TMZ.
Thompson was not present in court for the hearing, but was represented by his attorney via Zoom. (The basketball player last month resigned with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he has spent the majority of his career playing for.)
Thompson’s petition was uncontested and Amari’s father, Trevor Douglas Thompson, did not receive notifications of the proceedings because his whereabouts remain unknown, TMZ previously reported.
Trevor Thompson ‘has actively been absent from Amari’s life since’ July of 2014, when his late mother ‘received sole custody of Amari and a support order against’ him, Tristan told the court in his petition, according to The Blast.
Tristan, who has past played for the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics and Sacramento Kings, said that Trevor Thompson ‘has never fulfilled any of his support obligations towards Amari and has been actively avoiding them.’
Tristan told the court that Trevor Thompson ‘has done nothing to support or raise’ Amari ‘and has relinquished all rights to have any say in’ his care moving forward.
Tristan said that Amari ‘has medical diagnoses that render him unable to provide basic care for himself and requires a Guardian to provide that care as well as take him to medical appointments.’
Tragic: The brothers sadly lost their mother Andrea, who passed away in early January from a heart attack at just 53 years of age (shown in a July episode of The Kardashians with Amari)
Help: Khloe Kardashian and her relatives have rallied to support Tristan in helping care for his younger brother in providing shelter, care and other necessities
Sweet message: Khloe Kardashian posted a birthday message for Tristan Thompson’s brother Amari in July
The issue of conservatorship also awaits as Amari, who is unable to care for himself due to several medical diagnoses including epilepsy, approaches 18.
Amari will also get $103,475 because of Andrea’s passing, and Tristan as guardian can protect his assets, TMZ previously reported.
Tristan said in legal docs that a guardian ‘is also needed to protect Amari’s inheritance from loss or injury.’
Tristan said in his petition that ‘appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs.’
It was revealed on the season three finale of The Kardashians that Tristan’s ex Khloe Kardashian, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner all flew to Toronto with Tristan on Kim’s private jet, and that Tristan and Amari moved in with Khloe, but she insisted they’re not back together romantically.
Andrea was the sole caretaker for Amari, and when she died in January, Armani was put into Tristan’s care, which meant moving him to Los Angeles, where Tristan lives.
However, in an unusual twist of fate, both Tristan – who has been on-again, off-again with the youngest of the Kardashian sisters dating back to 2016 – and Amari actually moved in with Khloe, after a weather-related mishap with Tristan’s nearby home that was being renovated.
Khloe revealed in confession during the finale, ‘Tristan has a house he’s doing construction on and he’s been renovating.
Family time: Khloe also shared a picture of Amari with her niece Dream, daughter True and mother Kris Jenner
Caretaker: Andrea was the sole caretaker for Amari, and when she died in January, Armani was put into Tristan’s care, which meant moving him to Los Angeles, where Tristan lives
‘He was able to live there during renovations, but we had crazy weather for California, like extreme rain, and Tristan’s roof caved in on his home and caused flooding,’ Khloe said on the Hulu series. ‘So Tristan and Amari are staying at my house right now, until his home gets fixed.’
Khloe confirmed in confession, ‘Tristan and I are not back together. I know it’s hard for everyone to believe, but I love love love Andrea and I love Tristan, I love Amari, and this is what family does.’
She added, ‘Tristan is the father of my kids, you know. I’ve lost my dad, and my dad was like a fairy tale parent, but still I can’t wrap my head around losing my mom, and I know how close Tristan and his mom are, and it’s just heartbreaking, and to be left with the responsibility of another person as well, it’s a lot.’
Khloe added that Amari has been, ‘having more seizures than normal because he’s just…’ as Tristan finishes, ‘adjusting.’
Khloe adds in confession, ‘I’m grateful that I’m strong enough and brave enough to be a support system for someone else that has no other support system right now. You don’t have to treat me right for me to treat you right. It’s not the way I was raised.’
Tristan said in the episode, ‘Thank you so much, especially from me and my family, I don’t know what I would do without you guys right now, like coming to my mom’s house and packing up and going through photos and cleaning up her condo and getting Amari for the funeral.
‘Like, you guys are like so busy, you guys have so much business going on, like, honestly, like, I don’t know, like, I just hope God continues to keep blessing you with everything you guys want, and that’s what my mom would want for you guys, so seriously, thank you,’ as Kris Jenner was seen wiping tears away.
Kris told Tristan in the episode, ‘You know, your mom had a lot on her plate and to be able to be Amari’s sole caregiver like really affected me so much, and that just broke my heart because Amari doesn’t know what’s going on and then all of the sudden you’re just stripped from the caretaker you had your whole life.
‘I just feel so lost for him because he’s probably just wondering where his mommy went and it breaks my heart.’
Father: She added, ‘Tristan is the father of my kids, you know. I’ve lost my dad, and my dad was like a fairy tale parent, but still I can’t wrap my head around losing my mom, and I know how close Tristan and his mom are, and it’s just heartbreaking, and to be left with the responsibility of another person as well, it’s a lot’
Back at it: The basketball player last month resigned with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team he has spent the majority of his career playing for
Kris added in confession, ‘Tristan has definitely made some mistakes and he’s definitely messed up, but at the end of the day, he’ll always be part of our family and we will be there for him no matter what.’
Tristan said, ‘As a son it makes me proud that I know like my mom like, her time on Earth like, you know, she helped a lot of people and she’s remembered for a lot of great things, you know.’
In July, the NBA player took to Instagram to share a smiling snap with him and his brother Amari.
‘Happy birthday to my sweet baby brother Amari! I love you forever! We Miss you mommy,’ Tristan said in the caption.
Khloe also posted a sweet message and photos that showed her daughter True and niece Dream with Amari.
She wrote: ‘Someone is 17 today!!!! Happy birthday sweet sweet Amari!!! We are all so blessed to have been touched by an angel such as you. You are truly one of Gods greatest treasures.’
