Kath & Kim’s Sharon Strzelecki cheers on the Matildas as they take on England at the Women’s World Cup: ‘Go green and gold!’

Magda Szubanski has transformed into her hapless sports-mad character Sharon Strzelecki to cheer on the Matildas. 

The comedian, who made the character famous on iconic series Kath & Kim, surprised fans by sharing a clip to Twitter on Wednesday. 

‘Hi, it’s me Sharon. I’m a bit frazzled, as is my hair,’ she began, looking slightly worse for wear. 

The avid netball player went on to add the stress of the Women’s World Cup has taken its toll on her. 

‘I got all these carbuncles and they joined into one giant carbuncle and I ended up in hospital,’ she continued.

‘So my doctors have said I’m not actually allowed to watch the game tonight. 

‘They are going to put me into an induced coma until after the game is over because I can handle this,’ she added.

She went on to voice the hopes of a nation, with her cheering on the women.  

‘Go Matildas, go green and gold. Sharon wants youse to win. I love you. I love you.’

While fans across the country ventured to Federation Square and AAMI Park in Melbourne, Tumbalong Park in Sydney, and Riverside Green and Southbank in Brisbane to get behind the green and gold.

The team’s progress through the tournament has produced an extraordinary effect across the land, with everyone from schoolkids to politicians and companies jumping on the Matildas bandwagon.

Star forward Sam Kerr officially took over Crown Casino precincts on Wednesday night, which will be rebranded KERR-ROWN in honour of the Aussie skipper.

The one-night only gesture will be seen across Crown Casino’s resort towers in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

Meanwhile, social media has lit up in support of the ‘Tillies’, with the team’s Instagram account quickly ballooning in recent days to 537,000 followers.

The Socceroos, by way of contrast, have just 313,000 followers on their Instagram page.
