James Corden reveals his obsession with hitting his daily steps target and his aim to cut down on drinking as he says he wants ‘to try to be healthier’

James Corden has opened up about the ways he is trying to be ‘healthier’ in his daily life, through counting his steps and cutting down on booze.

The presenter, 45, and his wife Julia Carey, 47, share three children together, Max, 12, Carey, nine, and Charlotte, six.

Appearing on the On Purpose podcast, James revealed to author Jay Shetty that he was obsessed with meeting his daily steps target.

He admitted: ‘Sometimes, once the kids are asleep, I’ll look and I’m at 8,000 and I’ll be like, “Babe, I’m just going to go”. And I’ll literally walk up and down the road.’

He also confessed that he has come to believe that getting enough sleep is an ‘extraordinary gift’.

James added: ‘I’m probably more aware of it now because I’ve got a 12-year-old who seems to think sleep is some sort of punishment.’

The actor also said that he was trying to stop drinking as much, citing his dislike of the aftereffects the next day.

He said: ‘I very rarely drink at home. But if I go out, I love the feeling of being three-and-a-half drinks in… I can feel it in my knees.

‘I’m going to try to stop doing that. I spoke to [a friend] and I was like, “How did you manage to stop doing this?” He said, “I started to ask how much of tomorrow do I want to borrow?”.

‘It’s like going to a cashpoint and you’re going, “I’m going to withdraw three hours from tomorrow that I will be useless”. I want to try and just be healthier.’

James recently moved back to London with Julia and their children, after quitting his job hosting The Late Late Show in May 2023 after eight years.

Explaining his decision to Extra, he said: ‘My kids are getting older, their grandparents are getting older, and it perhaps just felt like the right time for us as a family to be freer in our decisions.’

Speaking to Drew Barrymore about his exit, James admitted: ‘Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so, I mean, I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now.

‘Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it. But the truth is it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never, ever considered it to be the final destination.

‘But I will know, at my core, that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down some roots in London, and it feels absolutely right in every single way.’

Last week saw the debut of James’ new radio show, kickstarting his first US job since leaving The Late Late Show.

He is the host of a SiriusXM interview show titled This Life of Mine with James Corden, which began on February 1.

Making the most of James’ lengthy list of celebrity pals, the show sees him having in-depth chats with ‘the world’s biggest stars’.
