This is the hilarious moment a cocker spaniel puppy performs a Houdini-esque escape trick through a baby gate.

Finley is a 17-week-old puppy who lives with his owner Jonty Egginton, 29, in Brighton.

Mr Egginton decided to install a baby gate after Finley kept jumping down all nine steps from the lounge to the kitchen.

He filmed himself closing the gate on Finley and leaving him standing behind the bars.

However, mere seconds later Finley is seen squeezing himself through a gap on the side before making his escape down the stairs.

Mr Egginton said: ‘I decided to install a baby gate after Finley thought the best way to get from the lounge to the kitchen was to bypass all nine steps on his way.

‘He sometimes likes to think he’s a flying squirrel until I remind him that he is in fact a puppy and doesn’t have wings.

‘I spent 40 minutes agonising over a complicated instruction manual trying to put the gate together. After putting the final screw in place, I put it to the test while I went to the kitchen to make myself some lunch.

‘I left Finley behind the gate, excited about the prospect of getting 5 whole minutes to myself without my toes being nibbled, but he had other ideas and decided to squeeze his skinny bum through the gap in the bannisters.

‘I couldn’t believe it! I reckon a few more weeks of fattening him up should do the trick. Can’t deny his intelligence though.

‘A few bits of cardboard have since been placed behind the bannisters to prevent any further escapes…until he works out how to hop the gate all together.’
