But fans hoping that High School Musical lovebirds Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez are still going strong will be sorely disappointed, after their ‘messy’ fate was revealed during the Disney+ spin-off show.
The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series hit the streaming platform on Wednesday, and one of original stars revealed that the pair are in ‘couples therapy.’
The meta-themed show featured appearances from Corbin Bleu (Chad), Monique Coleman (Taylor), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) and Kaycee Stroh (Martha), who all reprised their roles from the original film series.
And in an early scene from season four, Corbin shared updates on all of the East High regulars in the fictional High School Musical movie.

Fans had hoped that stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens would make a cameo in the final season of HSMTMTS, but they were nowhere to be seen.
Series creator Tim Federle previously told PEOPLE in 2022 that an invitation had been extended to all of the original HSM stars to appear in season 4.

The third High School Musical movie brought an end to Troy and Gabriella’s story in 2008, with the basketball star accepting joint honours to study his sport and musical theatre, at the University of California, to stay close to his girlfriend at Stanford.
HSMTMTS came to an end with lovebirds Ricky and Gina able to continue her romance, after her big Hollywood breakout role was relocated from New Zealand to Salt Lake City.
‘If this is goodbye to High School Musical for now, we all still love it, and that would be good enough,” Tim Federle told EW on set last year.
‘The natural cadence of the show at East High is that we tell a semester per season, so season five would almost certainly be second semester senior year, but built into High School Musical 3, there is a graduation sequence, so it’s almost like we emotionally graduate in season 4.
‘They’re literally wearing red gowns at the end, so you see them bow and say goodbye and say thank you. That feels very meaningful.’
