Harry Kane has admitted he has struggled for motivation this season in the aftermath of England’s Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy at Wembley.

England’s penalty shoot-out defeat was followed by intense scrutiny over Kane’s club future, with Premier League champions Manchester City trying to sign him from Tottenham.

‘It’s always hard,’ Kane said when asked about staying motivated. ‘The last two major tournaments we’ve had getting to the semi-final and the final, it takes it out of you not just physically but mentally.

‘In just a few weeks you are back playing Premier League football and it feels like you don’t always have a chance to take it all in and learn from it, see what you did well and what you didn’t It almost becomes a whirlwind sometimes so it is about adapting to that.

‘It’s about getting back to basics, on the training pitch. We play a lot of games a year, there’s not always a lot of time to recover and reflect on things.

‘I think it was tough in the summer in terms of that loss, losing the final for your country at Wembley that will stay with me for the rest of my career, you never get over that sort of thing and hopefully we can go and win another tournament. That always stings.’

Kane admitted too that the questions marks over his club future were another distraction for him to contend with.

‘There was a lot of talk and speculation over the summer, it is the first time it has happened to me but it is part and parcel of learning, of being a big player and I have to deal with that, I think I dealt with it well. There is a long way to go at club level but now it is about these two games.’

England take on Albania at Wembley on Friday knowing a victory would at the very least all-but secure their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
