A man has been charged after he allegedly threatened a football player with a knife at a local rugby league match in a terrifying incident over the weekend. 

Wild scenes erupted at a sportsground in Hammondville, Sydney’s south-west, at around 2pm on Saturday. 

It’s believed the alleged attack happened following a reserve grade football game held between Chester Hills Hornets and Canley Vale Kookas rugby league clubs. 

A 19-year-old spectator and a player allegedly became locked in an argument, before the spectator is alleged to have threatened the player with a knife.

It’s unclear whether the two men are related and what they argued about at the time before the alleged incident unfolded.  

Nearby players and spectators at the ground stepped in to stop the situation from escalating. 

Footage showed crowds forming as the altercation spiralled in front of families and parents that had visited the oval to watch the match. 

No one was injured during the incident. 

The 19-year-old man allegedly fled the scene, before he was found by officers nearby a short time later. 

A NSW Police spokesman, said the man was charged after he was taken to Liverpool police station. 

‘He was taken to Liverpool Police Station and charged with affray, armed with intent to commit indictable offence and wield knife in a public place,’ he said. 

The man from South Wentworthville, in Sydney’s west, was refused bail and appeared before Liverpool Local Court on Monday. 

He was refused bail and has been ordered to appear back in court on August 21.
