Shortly after its premiere, The Hollywood Reporter panned Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night debut with one reviewer saying it ‘began to look like beer commercial outtakes, with one guest after another smiling and shaking hands and saying absolutely nothing of consequence.’

Despite early negative reviews, Jimmy Kimmel Live has since won three Emmys out of 35 nominations, according to the Emmys website.

Clooney’s appearance at the event marked a rare day off from directing for the Up in the Air star.
