Gemma Owen and Luca Bish’s relationship timeline – from Love Island villa to split

Gemma Owen and Luca Bish have split – three months after missing out on being crowned Love Island winners, MailOnline revealed on Wednesday.

The runners-up called time on their romance last week – and failed to join their ITV co-stars at the channel’s glitzy Paloozza on Tuesday evening.

Gemma then confirmed their split with a statement shared to her Instagram stories on Wednesday evening, saying it ‘wasn’t an easy decision.’

The couple made it all the way to the final with their romance but became the first couple to part ways.

MailOnline takes a look at their relationship from the villa to their split, to determine what went wrong.

FIRST MEETINGS

Originals: Gemma and Luca were both OGs in Love Island, being part of the first five girls and boys in the villa

Gemma and Luca were both OGs in Love Island, being part of the first five girls and boys in the villa.

However, this year saw a twist whereby the public decided who would be coupled up with who.

This saw Luca paired with Paige Thorne, while Gemma was chosen to be partnered with Liam Llewellyn.

However, Gemma clashed with Liam from the oft, and declared there was ‘something missing’ with the student.

She was soon stolen away when Italian Stallion Davide Sanclimenti arrived as the first bombshell.

Despite not being paired up with each other, a spark grew between Luca and Gemma and he stole her off Davide in the second recoupling.

JACQUES

Gemma was shocked to see him and Jacques revealed he still cared for Gemma and that he was ‘gonna have her back in here’.

Luca was not impressed with the situation and declared that he was ‘fed up’.

Gemma soon made thing worse by accidentally calling Luca by Jacques’ name leading to their first row and Gemma labelling Luca a ‘p***k’.

However, their connection stayed strong with Gemma assuring Luca she was over Jacques, and the rugby player convincing Luca that he wasn’t trying to win her back.

Jacques and Luca even ended up forming a close bond and becoming best friends in the villa.

DANICA

Luca was devastated and later told Gemma: ‘I want you, that is it and I don’t care.’

Speaking in the beach hut, he added: ‘It will make us stronger but I am gutted.’

REUNITED

After being forced to spend a week apart they were reunited at the recoupling and went from strength to strength.

During the Casa Amor episodes, Luca remained the only boy to stay loyal and the pair maintained their connection.

When they were reunited they exchanged ‘I love yous’ for the first time, with Luca gushing: ‘I’ve never been so sure in saying something, because I’ve not seen a future with someone like I have with you, and I, uh, I think I’m in love you with you. Nah, I am in love with you.’

To which Gemma quickly responded: ‘I love you too!’

The pair’s romance then hit the rocks during movie night, with Luca accusing Gemma of flirting with Billy and the pair then had an explosive row.

He fumed: ‘If you wanna flirt then I’ll flirt, get me a bombshell in here now!’ before adding, ‘I can’t be with someone like that, I’m sorry.’

His reaction led his family to take to Instagram Stories on his account to say they didn’t condone his behaviour towards Gemma.

They say his behaviour is not reflective of the boy they ‘know and love at home’ and that he  would be ’embarrassed’ by his actions.

Fans at the time also called for Gemma to break off her relationship after Luca raged at her for ‘flirting’ with bombshell Billy.

ROUGH PATCH

While they made up after the Billy incident, they soon had another row after the mile-high challenge.

Luca stormed off and removed his microphone, after Gemma licked co-star Adam Collard in the task.

Luca pushed Gemma off him and she later confronted him, saying: ‘Luca, don’t play thick. You were pushing me off, had a face like a slapped a**e, are you 12?’

Though they didn’t come to an agreement, they both agreed to move on from the fight.

BACK ON TRACK

Tease: 'My favourite moment was the challenge that we just done actually, where I licked Adam, he was really sweaty,' Gemma said as she poked fun at their earlier fall out

Private: They successfully made it to the final, where they enjoyed their last Love Island date in a pool in picturesque courtyard while being serenaded by a six-piece ensemble

Luca and Gemma seemed back on track after the row and bonded over being ‘parents’ in the baby challenge.

Luca admitted: ‘Did I actually think I’d meet someone like you that makes me want to move to the other side of England for? No.’

While Gemma opened up and confessed: ‘We are literally the same person, it’s crazy. We wind each other up. But we both love it.

During the Summer Ball, Gemma opened her heart to Luca in her emotional speech as she admitted to being ‘hard work’ and ‘loving their banter’, but otherwise felt their journey had been ‘plain sailing’.

Luca said that he was immediately drawn to Gemma’s smile and although he thinks she is ‘sexy’, he revealed that it was the ‘little things’ that helped him to fall in love.

The couple made it all the way to second place, narrowly missing out after being beaten by Ekin-Su and Davide.

ON THE OUTSIDE

Speaking out: Since leaving the villa, Luca spoke out on being accused of controlling and misogynistic behaviour on the show, sharing that he had apologised to Gemma since leaving

Speaking to Grazia magazine he said: ‘She’s a strong woman so she would never let herself be in a situation like that. There are parts where I’m thinking this is not how I behave on the outside world. Why did I do that?’.

He added: ‘When you feel so strongly for someone and then you’re still getting put in situations because they [producers] are making us do challenges, throwing new people in there to play with your emotions and your feelings – I’d genuinely just had enough of it.’

After leaving Love Island, Luca also shared his desire to move house to Chester to be near Gemma.

Luca, who hails from Brighton, told how he was looking for somewhere to rent in the celebrity hot spot but wouldn’t be moving in to her family’s estate.

He said at the time: ‘There is no middle ground – it’s Chester or nothing!’

‘I’m happy to go wherever she wants me to go. I haven’t got too many commitments back home so it’s easier for me to move. Whatever makes us happy and whatever is right we’ll do. Hopefully if I move near her, in time we’ll get a place together.’

He added: ‘Just to be near her family I’ll love. Hearing stories about her barbecues and stuff like that, I’m quite excited and I feel like I’ll fit right in.’

He said of their first meeting: ‘The first time I ever met him I went on holiday with him to Portugal, which is quite a weird first experience to have with your future father in law.

Luca was also quizzed on whether Michael had spoke to him about some of his behaviour towards Gemma during their time in the villa.

Luca replied: ‘Not at all. He would have if he’d seen anything he didn’t like I’d imagine, but not yet.’

The fishmonger previously revealed that he was waiting for approval from Michael before asking the big question.

Fans claimed the scene resembled ‘a proposal’ with a rose display, cello player and videographer to capture Luca asking the question.

Luca also surprised Gemma with a gorgeous bunch of red roses and a £6.5k Cartier bracelet to add to her collection.

He then escorted her out to a swimming pool filled with red balloons floating in the water which read ‘be my girlfriend’.

Sharing the video to his 1.4M followers, Luca played the Major’s romantic song Why I Love You over the romantic clips, captioning ‘finally’.

While Gemma shared a slew of loved-up snaps from the evening and captioned it: ‘Finally official. Thank you Luca Bish for a special night’.

From then the relationship seemed to be plain sailing, with Gemma telling MailOnline how well Luca fit her family.

She said: ‘Luca fits in quite well and he gets on with my siblings, my mum and my dad as well.

‘His family are lovely too – I get on with all of them really well and have a good relationship with his sister.

‘I have really enjoyed spending time in Brighton with them when I can and the same when he comes to Cheshire.

‘In terms of my relationship and Luca – it’s all going really well. Luckily, we’re able to spend time together so the relationship is going really well and it’s all positive.’

She added that they had no plans to move in together yet and that the couple were taking things day by day.

Gemma said: ‘We don’t have any plans to move into together just yet. I’m a home girl, it’s where everything is, I’m family orientated and I’m still young.

‘In the immediate future I’m happy with where I am, and the setup Luca and I have.

‘We are everywhere right now, when I’m down in London working, we spend time with each other and when we have a free weekend, he’ll join me in Cheshire and be with the horses. We’re making it work around our busy schedules.

‘We’re seeing how it goes, we’ll go on a few nice holidays – no pressure.’

‘SHOWMANCE’

However, criticism of Luca’s jealousy and possessiveness from fans continued, especially when a video of Luca and Gemma soon went viral, showing Luca fuming as Gemma leapt into the arms of a male pal.

Then, after Paige made suggestions that one of the show’s remaining couples is a ‘showmance’, rumours began to fly about Gemma and Luca.

In response to the question, ‘Who is the fakest couple to come out of Love Island this year?’, Paige said on the Saving Grace podcast: ‘All I’m gonna say on this is, wait how many couples are left now? Three?

‘Really, there’s only two. But that’s a secret I’ll never tell.’

However, speaking to The Mirror, a source close to the couple said: ‘There is lots of talk and rumours about a showmance amongst this year’s contestants but it certainly isn’t Luca and Gemma that everyone is talking about.

‘Luca and Gemma are closer than ever, they don’t feel the need to ham it up on social media every day.

‘Both have lots going on but they’re staying together most nights and when they do have to be apart, they are constantly on the phone with each other.’

However, Luca then made a solo appearance at the TV Choice Awards, without his reality star girlfriend last week.

He said: ‘Gemma was meant to be in America but it got cancelled and she couldn’t find a dress last minute and she lives four hours away so had to let her off tonight.’

He insisted the relationship was still going strong, saying the couple try and spend as much time as possible together whenever their busy schedules allow, with him based in Brighton and Gemma based up in Cheshire.

Luca added: ‘Whenever we get free I’m up there with her or she’s down here with me but she has to prioritise her horse and riding.’

He went on to admit he hadn’t gone on Love Island to find love, but that he had been happy to meet Gemma.

Luca said: ‘You’re naïve to go in there to think your going to find love. It’s called Love Island, but I never went in there thinking I’d meet Gemma. I’d be a liar to say that.

‘I went in there for a good summer and to have a good time and on top of it all I’ve met a girl I couldn’t ask anymore from.

‘Me and Gemma are the youngest couple to come out the show and we’ve not planned anything. We just take it day by day and as it comes.’

However, he then appeared solo at the ITV Palooza on Tuesday evening, again without Gemma on his arm.
