Ruth Jones, 53, looks worlds away from her Gavin And Stacey alter-ego Nessa in glam new shoot as she admits ‘she’s too lazy to dress up and put make up on’

Gavin And Stacey star Ruth Jones has said she prefers Cardiff to the red carpet and would rather hang out with her friends than celebrities.

In an interview with Woman And Home magazine, the 53-year-old said: ‘I still live in Cardiff. My family are nearby and my old friends. I guess I don’t want the red carpet lifestyle enough to change that.’

She continued: ‘I wouldn’t go out of my way to go to a big celebrity bash. You have to make an effort to dress up and I’m a bit lazy really.

Down to earth: Gavin And Stacey star Ruth Jones, 53, told Woman And Home she’s ‘too lazy to dress up and put make-up on and would rather hang out with her pals than celebrities’

She said: ‘I still live in Cardiff. My family are nearby and my old friends. I guess I don’t want the red carpet lifestyle enough to change that’

‘I can’t be bothered to put make-up on – I certainly don’t wear it day to day. There’s something more enjoyable about being at a party among your friends.

‘That makes me sound ungrateful. I’m not. I just don’t do the celebrity hangout thing.’

Ruth, who is best known for playing Nessa in Gavin And Stacey, did say she enjoyed a night out at the NTA’s in January with co-star Rob Brydon.

She also discussed being in her 50s and said she still feels two decades younger.

Honesty: Ruth also said she wished she had taken better care of herself when she was younger saying she always believed she would stay in good health forever

‘I’d have looked like a little old lady who went for a shampoo and set every week. But it’s funny – when you get to your 50s it’s not like that at all because apart from a few aches and pains, I feel like I’m in my 30s. Perhaps I ought to behave accordingly.’

Ruth also said she wished she had taken better care of herself when she was younger.

She said: ‘I have a bit of arthiritis in my knee. When you’re younger you think, “Oh that won’t happen to  me” but of course these things do.’

Ruth admitted that she had actually dreaded turning 40, but a lot of good things happened to her from that point.

She said: ‘A lot of great things happened in my career and I finally started to believe in myself, and that I could achieve things. You appreciate success more when it comes later in life.’
