Gary Neville reacted in disbelief after Christian Eriksen was left marking Erling Haaland for Manchester City’s second goal in their derby demolition of Man United.

The 5ft 10in Danish midfielder was brushed aside by the 6ft 5in Norwegian striker, who met Kevin de Bruyne’s corner to score despite Tyrell Malacia’s best efforts to clear off the line.

After Haaland had skirted around Eriksen, both Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot were unable to jump high enough to prevent him making a firm contact.

French defender Raphael Varane was meant to be marking Haaland but he was off the pitch receiving treatment as the corner was delivered and had to go off shortly afterwards.

It was just one moment in a first-half horror show by United as they went in 4-0 down at the break.

Haaland netted two goals with Phil Foden also scoring twice as United were blown apart.

‘I’ve no idea why Eriksen is marking him in that initial phase and the rest of them are stood still when he’s on the move,’ Neville asked on Sky Sports commentary.

‘Eriksen can’t handle him physically. He gets up so early, he’s so strong and the technique is brilliant.’

One wrote: ‘Someone tell me why Eriksen is marking Haaland in the first place, makes no sense.’

Another said: ‘Eriksen marking Haaland on a corner… what a great idea that is.’

Another tweeter said: ‘I want Ten Hag to explain to me, very slowly, why they decided to put Eriksen on Haaland during a corner.’
