Grateful: Gary Ablett Jr’s wife Jordan shared sweet tribute to her AFL star husband and their son Levi, 2, in an Instagram post on Friday after secretly welcoming their daughter, named Grace Honour, last week. Gary, Jordan and Levi are pictured

The doting mother of two wrote: ‘Being away from this boy was heartbreaking in hospital. I was flooded with tears every day.

She explained that she felt a ‘strange guilt’ because she couldn’t be with her son because she was in hospital ready to give birth to his sister.

However, she said that coming home with his sister and seeing him smiling with the sweet balloon display was a joyous moment.

Jordan continued saying she was ‘immensely grateful’ her husband held her hand throughout their pregnancy journey.

She thanked him for the constant support, love and encouragement he showed her and their son.

‘You’ve so graciously taken on the role of primarily caring for him as it’s been physically too demanding for me, whilst helping me with the grief that continues to hover after loosing one of my most supportive pillars in life,’ she said, referencing her late mother Trudy Papalia.

Jordan also gave a special thanks to her in-laws, family and close friends who have helped her family during her pregnancy, writing: ‘We are so grateful for our village!’

The Ablett’s kept news of Jordan’s pregnancy quiet and announced the birth of their daughter Grace Honour on November 11, in respective Instagram posts.

In an interview with the podcast The Significant Others back in March, Jordan spoke about the family’s heartbreak after Levi was diagnosed with a degenerative illness.

She said it took a long time for Levi to be diagnosed with the unspecified disease, and detailed the devastation she and Gary felt after learning the condition was ‘life threatening’.

‘I just remember sitting with Gaz in that meeting and when they said it I just remember absolutely breaking down,’ she said.

‘There is a very short life expectancy, which is why I constantly say to people when they ask about Levi that we are literally just taking it day by day because we have no idea what the future holds,’ she continued.

After seeing a series of paediatricians, Jordan said it was the Geelong Football Club’s team doctor who finally put them in contact with the right person.

She said this new paediatrician ‘got the ball rolling’, and after months of concerns, the couple, who married in 2016, finally had some answers.

Jordan said she and Gary first became concerned after noticing Levi wasn’t reaching the same milestones as other children his age.

They decided to go public with the little boy’s condition because they didn’t want to have to lie when people asked about their son.

'There is a very short life expectancy, which is why I constantly say to people when they ask about Levi that we are literally just taking it day by day because we have no idea what the future holds,' Jordan said

Jordan said Levi’s condition has only made the family more aware of how precious every moment they have together is.

The eldest son of Aussie Rules legend Gary Ablett Sr. – who was so skilled he was nicknamed ‘God’ – Gary Jr. was an all-time great for AFL teams Geelong and the Gold Coast from 2002 to 2020.

The midfielder won two premierships with Geelong and took out the 2009 and 2013 Brownlow Medals as the best player in the game.

He was forced into retirement after a bad run with injury with 357 matches under his belt.
