First all-new Ford Ranger in a decade will have a BIGGER V6 option for towing

The first all-new Ford Ranger in a decade has been styled to look tough and will come with a V6 turbo diesel option designed to tow a boat or caravan.

Ford’s bestseller is being replaced in 2022 and will be available with a bigger engine, setting it apart from its main rival the Toyota HiLux which is only sold as a four cylinder.

That could see a six cylinder vehicle top the monthly Australian car sales charts for the first time since 2011 when the Holden Commodore, then made in Adelaide, still had a legion of followers.

Ford hasn’t had a big six ute available in Australia since it stopped making the Falcon locally in 2016.

The next Ranger, arriving in showrooms in the middle of next year, will have a V6 option that provides more power and torque for heavy towing, Ford revealed on Wednesday ahead of its Australian launch.

The three-litre engine with 186 kilowatts of power had previously been available on the bigger American Ford F-150 pick-up truck until diesel engines were this year dropped from the US range.

Pritika Maharaj, a Melbourne-based engineer in charge of developing the new Ranger, said motorists wanted more power.

‘When you drive a Ranger with the V6 turbo diesel, it feels like a much bigger truck,’ he said.

‘And it feels really tough in the sense that it’s got endless power and torque, which is exactly what our customers wanted.’

The V6 will be one of three engine options – all diesel – on the next Ranger.

The 3.2 litre five cylinder diesel engine with 147 kilowatts of power is being discontinued, having been the power plant for the volume-selling models.

Instead, a single-turbo, two-litre four cylinder engine will be the default powerplant for the base models.

This engine is standard on the existing Raptor models and is presently optional on other models.

Ford has released new images of the popular XL, XLS, XLT and Wildtrak models, which will be going on sale in possibly June or July 2022, with the 4×4 dual cabs consistently outselling the single cabs favoured by tradies.

The Sport model will become a permanent addition to the range after being a limited edition special.

The more upmarket $78,000 Raptor with a FOX Racing Shocks is going on sale in late 2022 but details are yet to be released.

This will be the first all-new Ford Ranger since 2011 and will replace the facelifted model that has been on sale since 2015.

The next model is 50mm longer and 50mm wider and will also form the basis of the next Volkswagen Amarok.

For the first time since the 1970s, a Ford won’t be the basis of a Mazda ute, with the BT-50 now based on the Isuzu D-MAX.

The next Ranger has been styled with C-shaped headlights to resemble the Ford F-150 pick-up truck in the US, which is only available in Australia through a private importer.

Max Tran, the Ranger’s chief designer, said the ute had to look the part.

‘Customers told us the Ranger needs to look tough and needs to inspire confidence,’ he said.

‘They were very clear in what Ranger should be, both in the way it looks, and the way it makes them feel.’

Ford’s ute outsold the Toyota HiLux in the monthly sales race for only the seventh time since 2017.

Ford managed to sell 4,135 Rangers in October 2021 to be Australia’s top-selling vehicle despite a 1.9 per cent sales drop compared with a year earlier, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data showed.

The Toyota HiLux has been Australia’s bestselling car, on the annual sales charts, since 2016 with the Ranger only displacing it for the No. 1 monthly position in September 2017, September 2020, June 2021, September 2021 and October 2021.

The Ranger outsold the HiLux in July 2020 and August 2020 when the Toyota RAV4 was the bestseller.

Until the next Ranger arrives next year, the new Toyota LandCruiser would most likely be the only V6 model in the top ten of the Australia car sales charts, with four cylinder models taking the other positions including the Isuzu D-MAX ute.

For decades, six cylinder sedans were routinely the No. 1 seller during the long era of the Holden Commodore versus Ford Falcon battle, which also saw the locally-made Toyota Camry, Mitsubishi Magna and Chrysler Valiant offer a big six.

The Commodore was available with four and six cylinder options from 1980 to 1984, with the VC and VH models, while the FG Falcon was also available with a four-cylinder Ecoboost from 2011 to 2016.

The next Ford Ranger could be a case of back to the future.
