‘No surprise he’s been taken off’: Fans react on social media as Van Dijk is substituted at half-time by Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford – before Reds boss says the defender was struggling with a hamstring issue

Fans on social media have reacted to Virgil van Dijk being substituted at half-time by Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool were struggling against a dominant Brentford and found themselves 2-0 down at the half-time interval – before eventually losing 3-1.

Fans on social media have said that the German manager was right to take Van Dijk off – following a ‘poor’ performance in the first 45. However, it has since been confirmed the 31-year-old was withdrawn with a hamstring injury rather than performance-related reasons.

Following the game, Klopp said: ‘Van Dijk had some treatment on the hamstring, the other two subs were some fresh legs, different skill sets as well.’

Before the Liverpool boss could shed any light on Van Dijk’s hamstring problem – fans shared their opinion on the sub.

One fan said: ‘Virgil was poor 1st half so no surprise he is taken off.’

This seemed to be a common theme among much of social media and another fan said: ‘Virgil off and deservedly so, he’s been poor.’

The Holland defender has been out of sorts recently and this continued in the first half against Brentford.

Another fan added: ‘No complaints from me about Virgil going off. Tsimikas and Elliott both shocking. Klopp could’ve taken off anyone to be honest so bad.’

Upon seeing Van Dijk’s substitution, rival fans also took to social media to share their thoughts on Klopp’s half-time swap.
