Selling Sunset’s Mary Fitzgerald has revealed that the heartbreaking scenes in which she opened up about her miscarriage were filmed less than 24 hours after she found out she had lost her baby.
The Selling Sunset star, 43, is seen breaking down in the new season as she shares the painful news with her close friend Amanza Smith, 46.
Now, Mary has revealed she filmed the gut-wrenching scenes less than 24 hours after doctors had delivered the devastating blow at an ultrasound appointment, because production was keen to capture her ‘raw emotions’.
‘We found out the day before,’ she told DailyMail.com exclusively. ‘Not even 24 hours. I think our appointment was 3pm or something and then they [production] were in my house at 7am.’
In season 7 of Selling Sunset, Mary Fitzgerald fought back tears as she revealed she tragically miscarried
The luxury real estate agent, 43, and her husband Romain (pictured) opened up about their pregnancy loss in the new episodes
She revealed that production had actually been scheduled to arrive at the home she shares with husband Romain Bennet on the night that they learned their heartbreaking news – but that her spouse banned crews from venturing onto the property.
‘We were actually supposed to have a scene that evening, and we were going to go show the ultrasound pictures and everything and when we found out Romain called production,’ she recalled.
‘He’s like, “You’re not coming – if you guys show up at our house you will not be let on the property, do not come, we need a minute to just go and be by ourselves and grieve.”‘
Mary said that she decided to allow the team in to film the following morning as she wanted to be ‘open’, sharing that Netflix scaled back the size of the crew to be as sensitive as possible.
‘They also wanted to have like, the raw emotions and the moment and I understand that,’ she continued.
‘It’s hard for me to do it, but I understood it. If I share the pregnancy, I also have to be open about miscarriage and so yeah, it was tough.’
When asked whether she felt any pressure from Netflix to film so soon after suffering the devastating loss, she said: ‘As far as that scene goes, if I really pushed back they would have understood and it would have let it go.
‘But I understood what their reasoning was and at that moment doing a scene wasn’t going to change anything.
Mary first broke the news of her miscarriage to good friend Amanza Smith, 46
Speaking to DailyMail.com, Mary revealed that she filmed the scenes less than 24 hours after doctors dealt her the devastating news
She added that Netflix wanted the ‘raw emotions’ of her pregnancy loss, but that she found filming the scenes ‘tough’
‘I was just like, I’m gonna have to talk about it, I’m gonna have to do it.’
She also stressed that the crew was ‘very supportive’, and ‘really showed me how great they are’.
‘They were very supportive during the pregnancy, trying to help keep me out of all the drama and stuff, because they know it does really, really affect me,’ she said.
‘And then once the miscarriage happened, they were also very, very understanding and supportive. If I couldn’t do something, or if I just needed time they were totally okay with that, too.’
Scenes aired in episode six show Mary and Romain inviting over their close friend Amanza the morning after.
‘We were supposed to go to the ultrasound to hear the heartbeat,’ Romaine says.
Mary told DailyMail.com that she and her husband Romain are stronger than ever before
‘We thought it was going to be a really exciting thing and we were excited to go,’ Mary adds.
‘We started doing the ultrasound and I’ve seen that look before. She was like “um why don’t we do a vaginal one, this one’s not really working, I’ll be able to see it better”. And I already started getting that sinking feeling.
‘I just feel numb right now. I go from crying, to just numb.’
Speaking in her confessional, Mary adds: ‘I just don’t know what the normal time frame is to get over something like this. I just keep moving forward and try to put a smile on my face and act like everything’s ok, but it doesn’t feel ok.
‘Romain is everything. I love him so much. He’s the best husband ever and one day we’ll be able to have a family together, I hope.’
Mary’s heartbreak came after she excitedly shared her pregnancy news with her Oppenheim Group colleagues.
She also divulged her initial reaction to finding out she was pregnant during episode one.
‘I’m so excited,’ she said. ‘Romain and I did not think that we would be able to get pregnant this fast and I’m over the moon.’
In March, Mary revealed she underwent surgery after suffering a septic miscarriage
Mary opened up about the loss in March, telling fans she had to undergo surgery as she suffered a septic miscarriage.
‘We were in Bali, we got pregnant and, unfortunately, that didn’t work out,’ she said in an Instagram video. ‘And on top of the miscarriage, [I] also apparently had what they called septic miscarriage, so I had to go in for surgery for that.
‘The reason why I’m speaking out now is because I do realize how common this is and how many people go through this, and it is not easy.
‘I needed a minute because there are so many eyes on me and everyone judges and everything, and it has been rough to say the least, but there’s still hope.’
A septic miscarriage occurs when pregnancy tissue that stays in the uterus causes a uterine infection about 1 to 2 days after the miscarriage. Mary underwent a dilation and curettage – a procedure which scrapes away the remaining tissue.
In December 2022, Mary revealed she and Romaine ‘did a round of embryo freezing’ that ‘didn’t work.’
The reality star is a mom to son, Austin Babbitt, 26, whom she welcomed when she was 16.
Selling Sunset season 7 is available to stream on Netflix.
