In a heartfelt post with photos of the hitmaker at various landmarks in the war-torn nation – following Russia’s invasion in February – Ellie wrote: ‘This weekend I travelled as a guest of President Zelensky and the first lady, Olena Zelenska to Kyiv to speak at the First Ladies Summit…It has been one of the greatest honours.’

Sharing photographs of herself being shown around by President Zelensky, Ellie also opened up about feeling inspired by climate activists in the country.

‘I was determined to be there in person to pay tribute to the bravery and resilience of the Ukranian People,’ she continued.

‘I was inspired by a number of people, but particularly a young #fridaysforfuture climate activist @ilyess_ek who I met at the Nature and Climate talks in Stockholm a few weeks ago.

‘Traumatised by the invasion of his country he nevertheless showed up at the UN talks determined to carry on his work.’

Ellie praised the ‘grit’ of Ukraine’s environmentalists, adding: ‘In fact every day as a @UNEP ambassador I am reminded of the immense contribution of Ukrainian climate scientists, renewable energy experts and environmentalists of all type.

‘They are living through an horrific war bankrolled by fossil fuels. They somehow find the grit to keep going, working and campaigning for all of humanity. So I always knew that if I got the chance, I would try to show up too.’

Reflecting on her trip, the star concluded with a message of solidarity with the invaded nation.

She penned: ‘On the night train to Kyiv I looked out of the window and could make out the endless fields… a reminder that the Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world, this bastion of culture, of science and humanity is also a cradle of resistance and courage and commitment.

‘I can’t tell you what an emotional journey this has been. There’s too much to put into words right now but I stand in solidarity, awe and respect with the people of Ukraine.’

Posting a clip on her Story, Ellie then shared of herself performing a snippet of Chervona Kalyna – a resistance ballad – accompanied by pianist Dmitry Shurov – who was a judge on the Ukrainian X Factor.

‘Special thanks to Dmitry,’ she wrote to her 14.1 million followers, alongside a yellow and blue heart emoji to represent the colours of the nation’s flag.

The Second Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen is described as being designed ‘to once again draw the world’s attention to the war that has been taking place for the fifth month in the center of Europe’.

An overview of the event added: ‘The main theme of this year’s event will be human. After all, it is the preservation and restoration of human capital that is the key to the successful recovery of the country.

‘At the same time, the Summit is not only about Ukraine. It is about every country in the world that has already felt or may feel the impact of war and other global crises.’

An emotive address from Olena Zelenska on the site also read: ‘A person, a person’s life and health, honor and dignity, inviolability and security are recognized as the highest values in Ukraine. Our Constitution states so.

‘This has always been the case, and no one will take away these values – this is claimed every day by our soldiers on the battlefield, by doctors delivering babies in basements, by volunteers evacuating elderly people from under shelling.

‘Someone measures the war currently going on in Ukraine by geopolitical ambitions, the confrontation between the civilized world and despotism. But I will say it more simply: for us it is a people’s war. And a war for people.

‘That is why a human is at the center of every discussion at this Summit. That is why I invited the first ladies to the discussion.

‘Because they use their experience and power every day to take care of people. This power is called soft, which at the same time does not mean that it is less powerful. Especially when there is unity.

‘So I invite first ladies and gentlemen, experts in various fields, celebrities to join the efforts.

‘Together we must win the battle for a decent life for the Ukrainian people and learn the lessons that will help overcome possible future world crises.’
