Desperation Road trailer finds a young woman on the run putting her trust in an ex-con in the thriller starring Mel Gibson and Garrett Hedlund

A young woman on the run has no choice but to trust an ex-con and his family in the new trailer for Desperation Road.

The thriller stars Garrett Hedlund as the ex-con, Russell Gaines, with Willa Fitzgerald playing the woman on the run, Maben, plus Mel Gibson playing Russell’s father – with the actor making headlines for starring in the new John Wick series The Continental.

The film was directed by Nadine Crocker (Continue) from a script by Michael Farris Smith, which he adapted from his own 2017 novel of the same name.

The trailer begins with Maben heading back to her motel room, when she’s asked by a cop what she’s doing.

‘Going back to my room, I didn’t do nothing,’ she says, before the cop forcibly grabs her and says, ‘Y’all never do.’

He forces her into his squad car before two gunshots ring out in the dead of the night.

Meanwhile, Russell is on a bus back home, when he’s met by Ryan Hurst’s character, as he arrives home to his father (Mel Gibson) and mother (Kat Foster).

‘What happened to your face?’ Russell’s father Mitchell asks, as Russell responds, ‘Just a little going-away present from the boys.’

We see footage of Hurst’s character and another severely beat him, as Hurst tells him when he’s down, ‘They let you out early. You ain’t out of my reach, boy.’

Later at night, over some drinks, Mitchell tells his son, ‘You’re being too hard on yourself. We can be forgiven.’

Russell is driving when he’s pulled over by a cop (Woody McClain), who happens to be an old friend.

The cop tells Russell, ‘Ain’t no point in keeping it a secret. One of our own was shot with his own pistol… which we can’ seem to find.’

That shot cuts directly to Maben running while holding the gun that she killed the cop with.

Maben is seen hugging her young daughter and saying they’re going to ‘stick together.’

Russell is outside on his truck enjoying a cigarette when Maben pulls the gun on him, telling him to get in the truck and drive.

It doesn’t take long for Russell to get the gun from her, saying he’ll give it back to her when she tells him who it belongs to.

She tells him over a campfire that she shot the cop, as he tells her she can hide out on a house on his family’s property, as Mitchell tells Russell, ‘I got your back.’

The trailer winds down with a number of dramatic shots, as Russell tells Maben, ‘it seems that you and I are tied together by some sort of invisible rope.’

‘Life’s a whirlwind. We’re all caught up in it,’ Mitchell says as the trailer comes to an end.
