Dancing On Ice star Alex Murphy shares support for Strictly’s Giovanni Pernice amid feud with Amanda Abbington

Dancing On Ice star Alex Murphy has shared her support for Giovanni Pernice amid his ongoing feud with Amanda Abbington.

The actress, 51, is said to have claimed the show left her with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and has reportedly demanded recordings of their rehearsals to review.

It is reported Amanda has sought legal advice over the dancer’s alleged behaviour towards her and believes video footage could ‘back up’ her claims.

Yet now Alex, who left the ITV skating competition in June 2020, has sympathised with the professional dancer as she opened up about what it takes to mentor a celebrity.

Speaking to GB News she said: ‘I think what happens – obviously, I’m a professional, I think Giovanni is great. I will as a pro stand with the pros and you’re like, ‘He’s doing the best he can.’

Alex, who won the show in January 2020 with partner Joe Swash, discussed what it is like working with different personalities and understanding that while it is a competition, it is first and foremost a TV show.

She explained: ‘It’s really hard because you have to gauge each person as an individual. So every time that you want to think to yourself, “This is a dance competition”, or, “This is a skating competition”. It’s not, it’s a TV show. And we need to remember that as professionals.’

Alex continued: ‘The hard part is every person is different. Every single time I went in, I had to have a completely different teaching structure.’

The skating professional pointed out that the key difference between Strictly and Dancing On Ice, is that the professionals on the BBC dancing show tend to remain the same year on year, while on Dancing On Ice they change more regularly.

Praising Strictly for this format, Alex made the point that having the same professionals means they learn it is a TV show and it allows the public to also get to know and love the professional dancers.

Alex explained that depending on who you are partnered with sometimes you know from the beginning that you aren’t going to win, so you have to reassess your goals as a pairing.

Amanda quit the BBC One series mid-series last year citing ‘personal issues’, with reports of a fallout between the pair.

It has reportedly taken months for her to recover from her Strictly stint and it is believed she has needed therapy following the ‘behaviour she was exposed to’.

Referring to reports that BBC bosses are sticking by Giovanni amid the allegations, Alex agreed that she thinks it’s great the team are backing him.

According to The Sun, bosses arranged a call between Giovanni’s management and Strictly executives where they offered him their full support and checked in on his mental health.

Giovanni is understood to have been assured that his place on the show is secure.

A source said: ‘It’s no secret Gio and Amanda had a tricksy relationship — but there are two sides to every story.

‘Bosses arranged a call between his management and show execs to discuss recent coverage and make sure he was OK as obviously he’s faced a hell of a lot of stick over the past couple of months.

‘The feeling is he is a tough taskmaster, but hasn’t bullied or abused anyone. The BBC see him as a key face of Strictly and will do all they can to support him.’
