A couple who played Mary and Joseph in a primary school nativity play 30 years ago have married.

Rose Childerhouse, 38, and James Macpherson, 40, were studying at Sixpenny Handley First School in Salisbury, Wiltshire when they played the leads in the Christmas production three decades ago.

Rose admits she had a  ‘school girl crush’ on James at the time but never in a million years thought they would get married.

James told The Sun he had only taken on the leading man role to impress another girl in their class.

He didn’t begin dating Rose until years later when they both studied at Westminster University.

However, their romance was brief and ended in heartbreak after Rose broke up with James for a singer.

In 2017, 15 years after they parted ways, Rose – a BOOM Cycle Master Trainer and buyer –  bumped into James, an advertising executive, on a night out in Bournemouth where their romance blossomed.

Two years ago, James proposed to Rose in Dorset, sweetly writing on Instagram at the time: ‘She said yes!’

And the pair tied the knot on Saturday at their family home in Farnham, Surrey surrounded by friends and family, with one writing on Instagram: ‘What a day!! We had the best time!’

‘It feels like it has been a long time coming but it was worth the wait,’ Rose told the Sun.

She added that it was ‘perfect timing’ and ‘couldn’t have been better’ noting that her romance shows ‘just how small the world is’.

‘We’ve got plans for children but something tells me it won’t be a virgin birth,’ James added.

‘We are going to have to encourage our children to take part in the play when we have them, because it has worked out so well for us.

‘Maybe it will be the same for them.’
